「ギン・リゾート」はサブプライム問題の打撃を直に受けた不動産企業。水曜日のリリースには、「ゴルフ大会へのスポンサーシップを即刻終わらせる」と発表。ギンは今年のギン選手権のメインスポンサーとして250万ドル（約2.25億円）の賞金額を出資するはずだった。ちなみに、この大会へのチャンピオンズツアーも管轄しているPGAツアーとの当大会のスポンサー契約はあと3年残っていた。
「このような法的処置を取らなければいけないことを非常に残念に思う。しかし、我々のメンバーに保証されていたものをリカバーするためにはこの手段しかなかった」とPGAツアーのタイ・ヴォータウ氏はコメントしている。
昨年末、ギンとPGAツアーはPGAツアーの「ギン・シュール・メール・クラシック」を打ち切る方向で合意。しかし、LPGAとチャンピオンズツアーの試合は継続することで進んでいた。
「訴訟」する行為が「悪」に見られがちだが、この場合、決してそうではない。なぜなら、経済環境が劇的に変化していることを考慮し、PGAツアー側はギンに対して来年以降の契約条件を見直そうと歩み寄っていた。にも関わらず、ギン側が何の前置きもなく一方的にスポンサー放棄の通知をしたため、PGAツアーはやむを得ずこのような手段に踏み切ったのだ。
「（ギンが）会社のリリースを出すまで我々は何も知らされていなかった」とヴォータウ氏。
この不況の中で経済的に苦しいのはどこも一緒だろう。特に、「ゴルフ」という富裕層をターゲットとした企業（車、不動産など）の業績はここ1年で更にがた落ちすると言われている。
公的資金の前例を持ち出すまでもないが、仮にこの訴訟でギンに対して「特例」が認められ（「このような経済環境の中で致し方ない」など）勝訴するようなことがあれば、契約年数が残っていてやむを得ずスポンサーを継続している企業も「だったらうちも...」とおかしな事に発展しかねない。
そうなると、PGAツアーの大会数も激減し、現在の形での存続が危うくなってくる。そしてゴルフ業界だけでは収まらない話になる可能性を秘めている。
なので、フロリダ州の裁判員の皆さん、ここは一つ冷静な判断をお願いします！
