昨日、全英リコー女子オープンを見ながら、
石川遼⇒宮里藍⇒タイガー・ウッズ
の順で日米のスターが同じ日に優勝したらこれはすごい歴史的な日になるな～・・・なんて密かに期待をしていました。実現はしませんでしたし、石川遼の完全優勝が感動的だったからか日本のスポーツ番組は当然石川が中心。石川遼もお見事でしたが、タイガーの今季4勝目もこれまたインパクトのあるものでした。
「世界中でプレーしているけど、今日のような日に立ち会ったことはない。この試合はいつも特別だった。でも今日はその中でも別格だ」
そうタイガーが語った試合を振り返りたいと思います。
タイガーが3年ぶりに出場した今年のビュイック・オープン。1週間の入場人員が12万人強だったと言いますから、相当盛り上がっていたようです。
今週のWGCブリヂストン・インビテーショナルと来週の全米プロ選手権を控えているため、多くのトッププレーヤーはビュイック・オープンはパス。そんな中でもちろん観客のお目当てはタイガー。この試合で気になったのは、全英オープン予選落ちから初めての試合でどんなパフォーマンスを見せるのか？ドライバーの方向性は修正できているのか？パッティングのタッチは戻ってきているのか？ハンク・ヘイニーと相性がよくないのか？などなど、今季最後のメジャーを前に課題は山積みにみえました。
また、長年地元のファンやスポンサーと貢献してきた「ビュイック・オープン」がGMの経営破たんにより来季以降は開催されないという噂が大会前から流れていました。ウォーウィックヒルズG&CCで開催された今大会は実に51回。アメリカの経済成長を支えてきた自動車業界の代表格でもあり、PGAツアーがスポンサーを探し始めた当初から「ゴルフと車」を結びつけるために協力してきたのがGMだったのです。ゴルフの長い歴史の中の一つの時代が終わりを迎えようとしていた今年の大会に、タイガーがスポンサーでもあったビュイックに「恩返し」する形で出場してきたのです。今大会は3年ぶりの出場。グランドフィナーレを飾るべく主役に注目が集まっていました。
ところがどっこい、蓋を開けてみるとタイガーは初日から大荒れ。自身の連続アンダーパーラウンド記録（31）は何とか守れたものの、ロースコアが出やすいウォーウィックで1アンダー、71と大きく出遅れてしまったのです。初日を終えて95位タイ。タイガー自身、プロになってからは一度も経験していない2試合連続予選落ちも囁かれ始め、とある新聞社のコラムニストによると「いろんな意味で、歴史的瞬間が訪れるかもしれないという異様な雰囲気」が漂っていたそうです。
しかし、ここからがタイガーの独壇場でした。

この時、ちょうどリアルタイムでPGAツアーのスコアを見ていたのですが、スコアキープしている人の入力ミスかと思いました。まるでゲームの世界のスコア。
「今日はたまたま幾つか拾えて63が出ただけのこと」
この日、一気に95位から5位まで浮上したタイガー。こんなラウンドは恐らくタイガーも生涯最初で最後ではないでしょうか。この日の勢いのまま、3日目には首位に立ち、最終日は難無くトップのままホールアウト。勿論、タイガー自身最高のカムバック優勝だったとのこと。普通の選手なら腐って予選落ちして帰るところ。さすがタイガーとしか言いようがありませんね。69回も優勝しているタイガーでもこの一勝は格別だったのではないでしょうか。
17、18番では最後まで大会を支えてくれたファンに向けてボールを投げ込んでいました。タイガーにとっては別の意味で特別だったようです。

これで全米プロも大丈夫と見る人もいれば、安定していないと言う人もいるでしょう。事実としては、これでタイガーは今季のメジャー全4戦の2週間前の大会を勝っています。しかし、前哨戦の勝利が「本番」での結果に繋がっていないのも事実。そして何より、このビュイック・オープンは優勝したものの、その内容は決して誉められるものはなかったということ。ティショットは左右に大きくぶれていて（FWキープ率は53.6%で全体の30位タイ）、パッティング（全体5位）に救われたようなもの。今年の全米プロの開催地「ヘーゼルティン・ナショナル・ゴルフクラブ」は狭いと攻略性の高い正確なショットが求められるコース。フェアウェイキープが求められるコースで、今週のような乱調ぶりだと不安がないといっては嘘になります。
2週間後（そして今週のWGCも）、どのような結果が待っているのかは本番になってみないと分かりませんが、当該週の練習ラウンド後の言葉にヒントが隠されていることでしょう。
それまでは、タイガーの歴史的勝利にちょっぴり浸りたいと思います。
