石川遼の米PGAツアーのデビュー戦が決まりました。2月19日からの「ノーザントラスト・オープン」と3月末の「アーノルド・パーマー・インビテーショナルpresented byマスターカード」から特別招待枠を受諾したらしく、この2戦の間に開催される「WGCアクセンチュア・マッチプレー選手権」にも出場する可能性があるようです。今年の石川はいよいよ海外でアピールする年になりそうですね。
さて、そのアーノルド・パーマー・インビテーショナルですが、大会名（スポンサー）は何度か変わっているものの、「アーノルド・パーマーがホストとして招待する」大会として知られている。多くの現役トッププレーヤーたちは憧れのパーマーへ敬意を表す意味でも出場してくる。タイガー・ウッズがこの大会を毎年スケジュールに入れているのも納得ができますね。
石川はパーマーから直筆の招待状をもらったようで、そこには...
「私は君の日本での活躍を追っていて、君のような若い年齢で達成したことは関心しています。また、自分の腕をさらに磨くためにインターナショナルな舞台でプレーをして将来を見据えていると理解している。そうであれば、3月にフロリダで開催する私のアーノルド・パーマー・インビテーショナルでプレーしてみてはどうだろうか」
と書かれていた。石川は「手紙を受け取って手が震えました。素晴らしい選手たちとあなたの大会でプレーすることは非常に光栄です」と返事を書いたそうです。
この大会の歴史について少し補足しておくと、1965年にパーマーは会場であるベイヒルクラブ＆ロッジを舞台にジャック・ニクラウスとのエギジビションマッチをプレーしたのです。勝負に勝ったパーマーは、ベイヒルが将来トーナメントコースになる可能性があるのを見越して1976年にコースごとごっそり購入。その後、設計家エド・シーイと共にコースの改修を行い、トーナメントを開催できる難易度に施したそうです。1979年に「ベイヒル・シトラス・オープン」になり、2007年にはパーマーの名前が入った大会名に生まれ変わったのです。
この大会、昨年異様な盛り上がりを見せました。もちろん、主役はこの人でした。

今年は石川が参戦するとあって更に注目されそうですが、果たしてタイガーは出てくるのでしょうか...。彼の復帰時期についてはいろんな噂が飛び交っていますが、恐らくこの大会もマスターズへのウォームアップとして候補には上がっているはず。
