先日、PGAツアーのビッグトーナメントスポンサーでもあり、タイガー・ウッズのスポンサーでもある「Buick」のゼネラルモーターズ（GM）がタイガーとの契約が切れる2009年以降も世界No.1ゴルファーのスポンサーとして残ることを示唆した。

今日入ってきたニュースで、アメリカの政府はGMを含め自動車大手３社の金融子会社などに対して公的資金による支援を実施する方向で検討に入ったとのこと。アメリカ政府は、自動車業界向けの政府保証融資250億ドル（約2兆3000億円）のうち、約50億ドルをGMに対して早期実施する方向でも検討に入ったそうだ。

ブルームバーグの記事によると、タイガーのエージェント、マーク・スタインバーグ氏は2009年で切れるGMとの契約について交渉を開始したとのこと。タイガーはBuickのCMに出演、また先週もお伝えしたBuickのプロモーションイベントなどにも参加している。もちろん、キャディバッグのロゴを貼り付けている。
GMマーケティングマネージャーのラリー・ペック氏はブルームバーグとの電話インタビューで、「現段階」ではBuickはゴルフ関連の広告宣伝費を削るつもりはないと伝えた。
タイガーの株価が現状維持なのに対して、GMの株価は今年で74％近く下がり、時価総額も暴落している。2005年以来、53,000人を解雇している。20世紀、世界を代表する企業がわずか3年ほどで崩壊しそうになっている。
そんな歴史的危機を目前に、スタインバーグ氏は2009年以降、スポンサーシップを「続けていく意味があるかを」探っていきたいとも付け加えた。
タイガーは怪我もあり、現在療養中。「我々も彼らの動向を見たいし、彼らも我々が今後どうなるかも気になっていると思う」とスタインバーグ氏。
どこからか「ふざけるな！」と聞こえてきそうなこの矛盾。ビジネスとしての判断として、タイガーを手放す方がダメージが大きいということなのだろうか...。最近、タイガーは米ビジネスウィーク誌で「影響力のある現役アスリート」の1位として取り上げられている。
タイガーにとってもGMはNo.1のお客様だ。米スポーツ・イラステレイテッド誌の調査によると、タイガーの2007年の収入は約127億円とも言われていて、うち22億円が試合での獲得賞金、105億円がスポンサー契約金だとのこと。Nikeに並ぶ高額を得ていることは間違いないだろう。
53,000人が無職になる一方、1人が年間何十億円もが会社の出費として出て行く。
