海外より衝撃的なニュースが！1ヶ月ほど前に書いた記事「ゼネラル・モーターズ（GM）、タイガーは『クビ』にしない」では、2009年以降もGMとタイガーのスポンサーシップ関係は続く可能性が高いと紹介しましたが、ここにきて話が急転。GMは24日、両者の合意の下、2009年末までの契約を一年間前倒しで打ち切り今年の年末で契約を終えることを発表した。
これで9年間続いたタイガーとビュイックの関係が途絶えることになる。PGAツアーの看板トーナメントでもある「ビュイック・インビテーショナル」「ビュイック・オープン」は引き続き来季も冠として残ることは決まっている。

GMの経営破たん危機がよりリアルなものになってきたのだろうか...。現在、アメリカ自動車大手3社「ビッグ3」は経営難に直面していて、工場閉鎖や従業員の大量解雇を防ぐため政府に対して250億ドル（約2兆4,000億円）の公的融資を求めている。「税金を使ってまで」民間企業を存続させるかを議論している一方、年間約7億円という大金をタイガーに支払っている。GMのマーケティング費用の全体額から見ると微々たるものかもしれないが、今のGMには喉から出るほど欲しい大金でもある。今回の世界経済大恐慌の一連で、世界のトップアスリートが直接打撃を受けたのは初のケースとなる。
仮にGMが公的資金による融資を受けたとしても、この決別は免れなかっただろう。その大きな理由の一つは、GM側の安直なマーケティングにある。「タイガー＝売れる」といった一昔前の考え方が元にあったのだろう。
最近の市場調査によると、ビュイックブランドの購買者の平均年齢は68歳だという。タイガー・ウッズに惹かれてゴルフを始めた人（主にM2？）、PGAツアーファンの中心層である30～40代男性からは遠くかけ離れている。タイガーを「若年層獲得」のために起用していたのであれば、それは歴史的なマーケティング失敗例として後世語られるだろう。
自動車産業のコンサルティングを手がけるStrategic Vision社の代表、アレクサンダー・エドワーズ氏は「この関係を長いスパンで見た時、GMのメッセージは消費者に届かなかった。彼らがどれだけいいプロモーション活動をしても、それが消費者の心に響かなかったということだろう。決して悪い関係ではなかったと思う。ハードルが高すぎただけだ」と言う。
タイガーが他に契約を結んでいる企業を見てみると...

どれを取っても「クール」なイメージのある企業ばかりが並んでいる。ここにGM（ビュイック）が入ると、一気におじいさんたちの顔がちらつく（アクセンチュアでさえ、若く感じてしまう）。世のマーケターたちにもいい勉強になったのではないだろうか。企業イメージを構築するためにアスリートを使うのではく、アスリートのイメージがあってのマッチングであるということだ。
またテキサス大学で広告宣伝の教授をしているジョン・マーフィー氏は「タイガーがプロ転向した時、彼はロックスターのようだった。ヒップで、格好よくて。ロックスターがビュイックを運転するか・・・申し訳ないが、そういう話だ」と言い放った。
世界一影響力のあるアスリートのメインスポンサーがよりによってGMだったということは、タイガーにとっては不幸だったとしか言いようがない。しかし、この決別が意味するものはもっと深いと思う。今年の残り、そして景気が底を打つといわれている来年にかけて、ゴルフ業界全体に波紋を呼ぶ可能性がある。
