先日、タイガー・ウッズのキャディ、スティーブ・ウィリアムズがテレビ解説デビューするとのエントリーを書いたが、またしても驚きのニュースが飛び込んできた。なんと、この度、自国ニュージーランドの幼児病院に1億円を寄付したそうだ。

主にジュニアゴルファー育成のために設立した「スティーブ・ウィリアムズ基金」からニュージーランドにあるスターシップ幼児病院に100万ドル（約1億円）の小切手が送られたとのこと。スターシップは約5.5億円をかけてガン治療用病棟の大規模改修を行う予定で、スティーブの寄付はこれに充てられる。スターシップの病棟は国の70パーセントの幼児ガン治療を行っているそうだ。
1999年以降、タイガーのキャディを務め、タイガーの獲得賞金の約10％を収入としていると言われている。1999年以降のタイガーの獲得賞金は約62億円だ。
スターシップ病院では初となる億単位の寄付に少々戸惑っている。「まだ信じられない気持ちだよ」と幹部は言っている。
「とても普通ではない人生を送れていることは、とても幸運なことだと思っている。でも誰かを助け、その人の人生を救えるかもしれないという思いは、何ものにも代えられない」とスティーブ。
その1億円の中身だが、当然、タイガーが稼ぎ出した賞金の一部は入っているが、去年からスティーブと妻クリスティーが募金活動を続けていたものも含まれるとのこと。タイガーが寄付したグッズをオークションした落札金も入っているそうだ。
「（タイガーは）この話を聞いてとても喜んでいて、興奮している。彼の努力もあるし、大きな助けとなっている」とスティーブ。
ちなみに、この話がネットでも話題を呼んでいて、多くのコメントが寄せられている。
