先週の全英リコー女子オープンの大会後、ライダーカップの女子ツアー版「ソルハイム・カップ」のメンバーが発表されました。1990年に始まった大会で、今回で11回目を迎えます。通算成績はアメリカチーム7勝、ヨーロッパチーム3勝、ここ2大会をアメリカチームが連勝中で実力の差が少しずつ浮き彫りになってきています。
両チームとも12名で構成され、アメリカチームは独自のポイントランキングで上位10名が自動的に選出され、残りの2名はキャプテン推薦で2名が選ばれます。ヨーロッパチームは欧州女子ツアーのポイントランキング上位5名に加え、それに入っていないロレックス・ランキング（世界ランキング）上位4名、そしてキャプテンのアリソン・ニコラスの推薦で決定しました。
大会は8月21～23日の3日間、米イリノイ州のリッチ・ハーベスト・ファームズで開催されます。

ウィにとって、これが初のソルハイム・カップ参加になります。これまでに何度も男子の大会や女子の試合でも「推薦」枠で優遇されてきたウィ。同じ「推薦」でも今回の場合は少し事情が違うようです。ポイントランキングは13位と惜しくもトップ10の自動選出枠に入れなかったのですが、それも彼女が今年まで正規LPGAメンバーでなかったこと、そしてポイントを稼ぐための出場試合数が限られていたのです（ポイントランキングは2007年8月から始まった）。
「彼女は推薦枠の選出に値します。みんなより少ない試合数だったにも関わらず、ポイントランキングで常に上がってきていました。やるべきことはやってチーム入りしました」とダニエルは推薦の理由を説明しています。確かに、試合数を考えると選ばれて当然だったのでしょう。
「とても光栄なことですし、興奮しています。このジャケットを着て、キャップを被れることを嬉しいですし、自分の国を代表して戦えることを誇りに思います。選んでくれたベスのためにも頑張りたいです」とウィ。
一方、欧州チームを引っ張るのは先日の全英リコー女子オープンを優勝したカトリオナ・マシュー。スーザン・ペターセンらも入っているのですが、平均的にはアメリカチームの方が若いですね。メンバーの顔ぶれを見ても、大舞台で勝っている・活躍している選手がアメリカチームに偏っているのが分かりますよね。
初めて国の名誉をかけた戦いに挑むウィ。果たしてどんなプレーを見せてくれるのでしょうか。
