今週のLPGAツアー「サイベースクラシック」に出場するミッシェル・ウィ。今季からLPGA会員としてツアー参戦しているウィはSBSオープンで2位に入り、初優勝がすぐそこまで来ていたかにも見えたのですがそれ以降は少々苦戦続き。これまで5試合に出場、計171,829ドルの賞金を獲得し、賞金ランキングも22位と、ある意味期待外れの結果になっています。
そして先日行われたサイベースクラシックの記者会見。「今後も男子の試合に挑戦したい」と、またしても話題を呼ぶ発言があったようです。

ミッシェル・ウィの「ビッグマウス」は意図的なものなのか、自分にプレッシャーをかけるためなのか、それとも本心を隠したくない（隠せない）からなのか...。
いずれにしろ、ウィはこの記者会見で、LPGAツアーで何勝かすることを前提に今後もPGAツアーに挑戦し続ける意思表示をしたようです。そして、男子の大会に勝ち、マスターズに出場することも視野に入れているようです。
「いつも言っていることですが、夢は大きく、目標は高く設定したい。簡単に達成できるものだとは思っていない。突然『男子の試合を勝つわ』なんてことは言うつもりはないけど、いずれは自分が到達できているであろうなーと思える長期的なゴールなんです。こういう目標を立てることで、自分のモチベーションにもなるし、もっと上手くなりたい！って強く思えるんです」
ウィがPGAツアーに出場した時の周囲のリアクションは様々で、女子の選手が挑戦することが話題になるから歓迎する人もいれば「冗談だろ」と見下す人もいました。
例えば2007年にソニー・オープンin Hawaiiを優勝したポール・ゴイドスなんかは
「150cmの男の子（タッド・フジカワ）と180cmの女の子（ウィ）がいるフィールドで優勝したのはPGAツアーの歴史の中で俺が初めてじゃないか」
と冗談交じりに皮肉る人もいました。
ウィが出場することに関しては、個人的には大賛成なのですが、まずはしっかりとLPGAで「実績」を残して欲しいかな...。マスターズに出場したいと言うのは自由だけど、まずはSBSオープンで最後8ホールで3打差リードを守って優勝して欲しいですね。
そうすることでウィが男子に挑戦することへの注目度は更に上がるだろうし、逆に勝てないままスポンサーの意向とかで出場してしまうと見ているファンは注目するどころか「どうせ予選通過なんて無理だから」と若干引いてしまうのではないかな～と思います。
だから早く勝っておくれ！
