マスターズで惜しくも史上最年長メジャー優勝を逃したケニー・ペリー。家族を愛し、ゴルフを愛し、純粋なキリスト教信者のペリーが最後まで戦う勇姿を見て感動した人は多く、瞬く間に「悲劇のヒーロー」になりました。
しかし！そんなペリーの清きイメージを（もっと言えば選手個人の品格と誠実さが売りであるはずのPGAツアーのイメージをも）根本的に覆しかねない1本の動画が最近公開され、ちょっと話題になっています。

問題となっているのは、ペリーが今季初優勝を挙げたFBRオープンでの一幕。プレーオフにもつれこんだ試合で、辛くも逃げ切ったのですが、そのプレーオフ1ホール目のアプローチを打つ直前のペリーの動きが対象となっています。
その動画がこちら。
何が起きたか分からなかった方は何度か見てください。ボールに注目してください。
このわずか14秒の動画が公開され、ペリーが「いんちき」をしたのではないか、と言われ始めているようです。
この場面、大きく3つのポイントに分けられます。
１．ペリーのボールはグリーン脇の深いラフに潜ってしまい、カメラマンが撮っている位置からではほとんど見えない状態です。
２．ボールに近付きライを確認したペリーは、手にしたクラブ（ウエッジ）をボールの後ろに置き、素早いモーションで3回クラブを地面に潜らせています。突如、ボールがくっきり見えるようになります。
３．ペリーは一歩下がり、素振りをします。この時点でボールの2/3は見えています。
この動画はオフィシャルによって何度も確認され、そして2週間前のザ・プレーヤーズで「問題となっている場面」として公になったのです。
FBRオープンのラウンド後、ペリーはルールオフィシャル同席の下、この場面を何度も見直したとか。しかし、その場で結論は出ないまま、ペリーの優勝が決まってしまったのです。
そしてこの場面がツアー中の選手の間で話題になっているようです。この日、ペリーと一緒にリプレーを振り返ったシニアルールオフィシャルのマーク・ラッセルは、何百回とこのリプレーを見ていて、時には他のツアープレーヤーの意見も聞いているとのこと。
「彼ら（他の選手）がこれを見て、真っ先に言うのは『これはアウトだね』と言うのです」とのこと。
審議対象となっている規則13.2で、
「選手は、クラブを地面に付けたり、自然物を曲げたり、動かしたり、壊すなどしてボールのポジション、またはライが自分に有利になるような行為をしてはならないし、有利になり得る行為を許してはならない」
問題となっているのは2点。
１．ペリーのライは有利になったか？
２．もし有利になったのであれば、それは故意的だったか？
1.に関しては誰が見ても一目瞭然で、有利になっていると意見は一致しているようです。ただ、２．の回答としては、何をもって「故意的」だったというのかで意見は分かれているようです。
海の向こうの欧州ツアーのチーフオフィシャルもこの映像を見ていて、彼の見解は以下の通り。
「選手はボールの後ろにクラブを置くことは許されているというのが事実。さもなければ、どのような状況でもアドレスを取る時にクラブを地面に置けないということになってしまう。どんな選手でも、クラブを地面に置いた瞬間、芝生は平らになる。問題は、過度にクラブを叩きつけていないか？ということ。要は、故意的ではあったか？ということなのです。私が見た感じだと、ケニー・ペリーはクラブを地面に置いた時、過度に地面に圧力をかけたとは思いません。一見、悪意があったように見えますし、ライが有利になったようには見えます。ただし、それが故意的でなければ、ペナルティーにはなりません。私は故意的だったとは思いません」
とのことです。
こういうのって、いくらルールを知っているオフィシャルでも同じことをジョン・デイリーやロリー・サバティーニがやっていたら結果は違っていたかもしれませんよね。ということは、どれだけルールに沿って結論を出すといっても、結局はその人の主観、要は審議対象となっている選手のイメージだったり前科などが何かしらの形で判断材料になっているのでは･･･と思ってしまいます。
