少し前の話になりますが、今月初旬、オーストラリアで開催された「ジョニー・ウォーカー・クラシック」でまたしても世界のトップティーンが開花しましたね。昨年、タイガー・ウッズの全米アマチュア選手権最年少優勝記録を破ったダニー・リー（18）が欧州ツアー（厳密にいうと日本、豪州との合同主催）初優勝。先にホールアウトしていた日本の藤田寛之らを横目に、最終ホールで堂々とバーディを奪ってみせた。
「タイガーが達成した記録を塗り替えて、『次のタイガーになりたい』。それが目標だ」
勝負根性もあれば、言うこともデカい。

リーは韓国生まれで幼い頃にニュージーランドに移住、国籍もニュージーランドに変わった。暴言とまでは言わないが、タイガーを挑発してみたかと思えば、移動中の空港で警備員に向かって不適切な発言をしてしまいちょっとした騒動になるなど、これから何かと話題になりそうな逸材。
現在はまだアマチュアだが、全米アマを勝ち出場権を獲得した今年のマスターズ後にプロ転向する予定だそうだ。
「マスターズはテレビでしか見たことがないけど、結構難しそうですよね。。。とりあえずは出場して、世界で最も難しいコースがどれくらいのものかを見てこようと思ってます」
と、謙虚なのか自信があるのかよく分かりません。。。
石川遼と共にプレジデンツカップのメンバー候補にも上がっているリー。日本では石川が再びPGAツアーに挑戦しに向かったことが話題になっていますが、現時点ではリーの方が世界から見れば実績も知名度も上だろう。
アジア出身の2人が、いつか世界で凌ぎを削る日が来るのかもしれませんね･･･。
