前編ではアンソニー・キムがキャディバッグにロイヤルカナダ銀行（RBC）のロゴを入れることになり、それがNIKE GOLF契約選手にとって如何に異例だったかを紹介しました。
実はこの2者が手を組むまでの過程の中で「不可解」な点があるのです。むしろ、「何で契約するの？」と思ってしまうような･･･。

RBCはカナダで1位、世界でもトップ10に入る金融機関。RBCからすると、アメリカでも認知度が上がってきていて、フレッシュな顔を会社のイメージにダブらせたかったのでしょう。そして多くの銀行が生き残りに必死になっている中、「我々は健全な経営状態にある」ということをアピールしたかったはずです。
しかし、実は昨年、RBCとキムの「友好関係」は思わぬ形で崩れかけていたのです。
全英オープンの翌週に開催されるRBCカナディアンオープン。全英を終えて、キムとキャディのエリック・ラーソンはその足でロイヤルカナダゴルフ協会のチャーター機で移動したのですが、トロントに到着した時、ラーソンはカナダの入国管理局に入国を拒否されてしまったのです。キムだけがカナダ入りし、ラーソンはそのまま飛行機に乗って米テキサス州まで飛ばされたのです。
実は、先月も似たような事件が起きてちょっとした話題になってました。ジョニー・ウォーカー・クラシック出場のためにオーストラリアに入ろうとしたキムとラーソンは、またしてもラーソンだけが国に入れなかったのです。
それもそのはず、ラーソンは1995年に麻薬所持で捕まり、11年間刑務所生活を送っていた元囚人なのです。その前科が問題で、カナダにもオーストラリアにも入れなかったのです。
そんな状況で、昨年、RBCカナディアンオープン出場に意欲を見せていたキムは一気にテンションダウン。ヘソを曲げてもおかしくなかったのですが、ロイヤルカナディアンゴルフ協会、RBC関係者とキムの代理人が賢明に彼を宥め、結局キムは別のキャディを雇って試合に出場していたのです。
唯一の救いはキムは優勝まであと一歩のところまで健闘し（8位タイ）、好成績を残したこと。きっとこの一連の事件もあり、RBCとキムの間には目には見えない「信頼関係」のようなものが芽生えたのかもしれないですね。逆に言うと、昨年、好成績を残せていなかったら、この契約の話は頓挫していたかもしれないですよね。
今週のWGC CA選手権にも出場するキム。今季はまだ去年のような爆発力を発揮していないだけに、そろそろ注目すべきかもしれないです。
