２週間前の話になりますが、これは「ゴルフの国際化」が広がりつつある中で大変気になる話題だったので紹介しておこうかと。

2週間前に中国で開催された欧州ツアー開幕戦「HSBCチャンピオンズ」での出来事。この大会、キムはドライバーをスプリンクラーヘッドに当ててしまい、ヘッドが変形したと判断されて失格処分を受けた。この番組を中継していた「Sky TV」（イギリス）がアメリカで人気沸騰中のキムのことをこのように紹介していたのです。
「これだけ中国人が多いと、昨日ホテルのロビーで彼（キム）と出くわしたかは分からないですよね。彼だったかは分からないですね」
無知とは怖いものです。キムはアメリカ生まれの韓国系アメリカ人。外見だけで「中国人」と判断してしまう、ましてやそんな問題発言を軽々と中継で言ってしまう解説者がいることが驚きです。更には、キムがアプローチでグリーンをミスした時、この解説者はキムが「アジア人が驚いた」表情をしている、と言ってしまったのです。
この解説者がどのような処分を受けるのかは不明ですが、少なくともイギリスのネットユーザー、新聞社はSkyTVを猛烈批判。以前にも、ゴルフチャンネルのケリー・ティルグマンというアメリカ人スポーツキャスターも似たような発言してしまい話題になった。タイガーがあまりにも強いので若い選手たちはグルになって「タイガーをリンチすべき」だ、と。悪意があったわけではないが言葉を間違えてしまったことで即クビになった。

この発言はタイガーが強いということを強調したくて言ったことだったので、そこまで不愉快な思いをした人はいなかったかもしれないが、今回のSkyTVの例は「人種」という非常にセンシティブなネタで笑いを取ろうとしたところに問題があるのではないだろうか。ましてや、ゴルフの国際化を推進している欧州ツアーの開幕戦という注目の一戦での出来事だっただけに残念だ。
英インディペンデント紙のカール・マッギンティー氏は「Skyの欧州ツアーチームは、番組を見ている視聴者が彼らの地元の立ち飲みやより遥かに広いことを忘れる傾向がある。ゴルフというスポーツは世界各国であらゆる人種やバックグランドを持った人たちが見ているのだ」と書いた。
おっしゃる通りだ。今回の件は少しそういった自覚が足りなかったのかもしれない。ゴルフを広めていく役目の人たちだけに、もう少し選手についても研究しておいてもらいたい。
