「クラウン・プラザ・インビテーショナル」最終日は白熱した展開になりました。白熱した・・・というよりかは、一体誰が勝ちたいんだと思ってしまうような展開でしたね。
最も残念な人だったのが、残り5ホールで2打差ありながら逃げ切れなかったティム・クラーク。1997年にUSパブリック・リンクス・チャンピオンシップを優勝、将来が有望視されていたのですが、2000年に手首の大怪我を負い翌年まで棒に振ってしまったのです。
なので実質的には2002年から始まったPGAツアー生活で、先日も紹介したとおり、8年間で闘った試合数184戦、うち期待されながら優勝した回数は0回。
それでも獲得賞金は13億円越え。過去8年間の日本ツアーの賞金王の総獲得賞金（1,282,658,461円）以上です（笑）。1勝もせずに。（これはツアーの賞金額の差もありますから一概には比較はできませんが...）
これだけ実力がありながら勝てない選手も珍しいです。「なぜ勝てないの」かはクラーク博士自身に考えてもらうとして、「今回なぜ勝てなかった」かをポイント別にわけて見ていきたいと思います。
最後の最後まで順調に来ていたのに、奇怪現象ともいえるおかしな崩れ方をしたクラーク。
・最終18番ホールのティショットをラフに入れ、
・試合を決定できた2.7メートルのパーパットを外し、
・スティーブ・ストリッカー、スティーブ・マリーノとの3名でのプレーオフになった最初の18番ホール。
相手二人は長いバーディーパットを外し、クラークは2.1メートルのパットを沈めれば...左に引っ張って...。
・プレーオフ2ホール目。マリーノが一打目を左に曲げて脱落。フェアウェイをキープしたストリッカーとの勝負。
・ストリッカーの二打目は1メートルないピンに絡むスーパーショット。狙っていくしかないクラークは...
ピンを直撃！しかし！
・スピンがかかりすぎていてボールはピン手前6メートルまであれよあれよと転がってしまう悲劇。これを外し、ストリッカーが決めて勝負あり。
見ている方が思わず目を覆いたくなるほどのこの一連の動画がこちらです。
ピン直撃弾を見て、一昨年のセルヒオ・ガルシアの全英オープンでの「俺には相手以外の敵（ゴルフの神？）がいる」発言を思い出しましたが、ラウンド後のクラークは・・・
「今日のプレーから何も得るものはなかった。試合を締めくくる場面で、まだまだ勉強しなければいけないものが多い」と反省しっぱなし。
やってる本人からしてみたら僅か１時間の間でてっぺんからどん底に突き落とされてしまったことは消化しきれなかったことでしょう。
でも、あの最後2ホールのショートパットはアマチュアゴルファー的な視点からするとよく分かりますよね（特に僕はノミの心臓の持ち主なので...）。入れたいとく気持ちだけが先行してしまい、距離を合わせに行ったり、打ち焦って左にプル（引っ張って）しまう。闘っている舞台がアマチュアとは全く別次元ですが、その心境は同じゴルファーとして似たものがあるはずですよね。
ああいう局面に立たされた時の精神状態ってどうすれば強くなれるのでしょうか...。
何かトレーニング方法はあるのでしょうか...。
心臓を取り替えればいいのでしょうか。
メンタルトレーナーの方がいたら教えてください（私にも、クラーク博士にも）。
