先週のクエイルホロー選手権、初日を7アンダー「65」で回ってきた時は何打差をつけて優勝するのかと思わせたタイガー・ウッズ。しかし残り3日間で2打しか伸ばせず、優勝したショーン・オヘアとは2打差の9アンダーで単独4位でホールアウト。初日のレポートでも書きましたが、好スコアを出せたのはラフが刈られていたことにあり、逆にリードを守り続けることができなかった王者の（現段階での）弱点が露呈した1週間でもありました。

マスターズに続き、この大会でもフェアウェイキープに苦しんだタイガー。結果、2打目が（上の画像のように）木の中から打つ場面が多く見受けられました。4日間を通してフェアウェイキープ率が44.6％（25/56）で全体の41位。毎年のことですが、タイガーのフェアウェイキープ率は他のカテゴリーと比べると極端に低いのです。

それでもメジャーを14勝、PGAツアーで65勝を挙げているのはグリーン周り（パッティング）と2打目以降の精度の高さがあったから。昨年、膝の手術をしてからミドル、ロングアイアンがうまくいっていないようなのです。
「（復帰後の）自分のゴルフには満足しているところもあるが、そうでない部分もある。むらがあるんだ。もう少し安定したプレーをしなければ・・・」
「（療養中は）何ヶ月もアプローチとパットの練習しかしなかった。ドライバーとロングアイアンでもう少し精度を上げていかないといけない。長いクラブのショットの現状には満足していない」とタイガー。
それでも復帰してのストローク戦5試合では、優勝1回、トップ10が4回とどうにかしてでもスコアメイクしてくるのがタイガーの強さ。これからメジャー3試合、そしてFedEx Cup優勝争いに入ってくると連戦が続きます。「連戦」に膝が耐えられるかも一つの試練になりそうです。
今週のザ・プレーヤーズでは復帰後初めての2週連続出場になります。「未知の領域だから、いいテストになると思う」とタイガー。
課題は明確なだけに、後は時間の問題なのでしょうか・・・。連覇がかかる全米オープンまでにはなんとか修復してくるのでしょう。
