やはりアメリカでは「今何してる？」を伝えて繋がるSNS「Twitter」が大人気のようです。
先日もTwitterを使っているプロゴルファーを紹介しましたが、その数は日に日に増えているようです。しかもその増え方が一人のプロの成功例がきっかけとなり、文字通り「口コミ」で広がっているようです。
今週のザ・プレーヤーズをきっかけにTwitterの輪に加わったのが
デービス・ラブIII。NASCARドライバー、カイル・ペティー選手の紹介で始めたとか。ゴルフとは全く関係のない愛犬の写真や「フレッド（カプルス）は池に入れませんでした」とコメント付きでTPCソーグラスでの練習ラウンドの様子を更新しているようです。火曜日に始めて既に300人ものフォロワーがいるようです！
そして、JJヘンリーも同様に。
今週から始めたようです。「スチュワート・シンクと練習ラウンド。150,000人ものフォロワーが付いたことを話してた」と書き込んでいます。
そう、ゴルフ界のTwitterの神「スチュワート・シンク」がこのブーム（？）を作ったのです。

シンクのTwitterは立派な「メディア」としての規模。既に157,000人の信者を得ていて、つい先日は「150,000人目のフォロワーになった人にNIKEのドライバーをプレゼントします」といったキャンペーンを実施。メーカーも大喜びでしょう。
彼が始めたきっかけは「タイガー、フィル、アンソニー・キムでない限り、テレビカメラを通じて自分のパーソナリティーをファンに伝えていくのは至難の業。派手な性格というか、目立つというか・・・。しかも、ゴルフは静寂の中で自分と戦う寡黙で、一見地味なスポーツでもある。
「タイガーはあのガッツポーズとカリスマ性が特徴だ。ただ、ほとんどの選手は至って普通の人間でつまらなかったりする。だから、そういう自分を出していければいいかな〜と思ったんだ。これまでのようにメディアを通じて自分のキャラを確立するよりね。そうしている人が悪いって訳じゃないんだ」
シンクの15万人のフォロワーって一見ただのファンサイト扱いされがちですが、個人的にはもっと意味のあるものだと思っていて、それは従来の「メディアと選手」の関係、「メディア」の報道の仕方を根本的に覆しかねないからです。
日本のスポーツ紙を読んでいても、サンスポでも報知でもサンスポでもどれを取っても掲載されている石川遼のコメントは一緒だったりします。それが「善」とされていた時代があったのは事実ですが、これだけ情報をかき集める手段が増えていくと自然と「もっと面白いものが読みたい」と思うものです。しかもそれをできてしまうツールが世の中には多く溢れているのです。
これまでのメディアは記者やコラムニスト、コメンテーターといった人たちが「プロ」としてそれぞれの専門分野で飯を食っていた訳ですが、それも所詮は「第３者」の立場での視点や意見であり、本人の言葉や思っていることに勝てるわけがないのです。これまでは「あの人の文章が面白い」と思って買っていた新聞や雑誌が、果たして本人の言葉の重みを越えられるのか・・・。
アスリート全員が自分のウェブサイトを作ってそこからコメントを発表し始めることはないと思いますが、少なくともその流れの第一歩をこのシンクのtwitterが作ったことは事実なのかな、と。シンクのTwitterは「一媒体」と考えてもいいと思います。だって、例は極端ですが、15万部売れてるゴルフ雑誌ってゴルフダイジェストと何がありますか・・・？
ちなみに、シンクはコメントやメッセージをくれた全員（本当に！）コメントをしてくれるとのことです。「みんなに聞かれるのは、『どこにそんな時間があるんだ？』って。時間なんてどこにでもあるよ。俺はパーキング出てから最初の止まれのサインの間に更新するよ」とのこと。（シンクさん、それ日本でやったら捕まるからお気をつけあそばせ）
ようは、時間なんてどうにでもなる、ということ。素敵な思想です。全くもって同感です。
