2年ぶりにPGAツアー優勝を果たしたロリー・サバティーニ。これまで、メディアを介してタイガー・バッシングをしてみたり、スロープレーヤーのベン・クレインと同組になった時はプレーイングパートナーを置き去りにして自分だけ次のホールに進んでティショットを打ってみたり、ドクロ柄のベルトを付けてみたりと、何かと問題児のイメージが強かった選手です。
この日、そんなイメージも少し変わってしまいました。デイリー同様、ミケルソンの妻を思いピンクのシャツ、そしてキャップにはピンクリボンを付けてのラウンド。
しかも、優勝がかかった土曜日の夜、妻のエイミーさんと一緒に他の選手や観客につけてもらうためのピンクリボンを作っていたそうなのです。
確かに、多くの選手がこの日キャップに付けていました...。

サバティーニにとって、この勝利は大きなターニングポイントになったようです。優勝後のインタビューで、エイミー夫人がサバティーニに「あの人のことを話したら」と切り出したところから始まったそうなのですが、サバティーニ自身も旧友（44歳）が「ホジキンリンパ腫」の病を抱えていて、「骨と皮だけ・・・85歳くらいに見えるくらい」の症状なのだとか。そんな友人に生き続ける勇気を与えたい・・・そんな勝利だったようです。
そして、そのインタビューの中で非常に印象に残ることを言っていました。
「こうやって僕らが毎週毎週やっていることが何のためなのか、少し総体的に見ることができる。（友人が病にかかっていることは）とても辛い。近い人がそんなことになっているのを見ているのは辛い。だから、フィルとエイミー・ミケルソンが今送っている毎日のことを考えると・・・僕は幸いにも最も近くにいる家族がそのようなことにはなったことがない。アトランタの友人がなんとか生き延びてくれることを祈っている」
これが「優勝」というプロにとっては最高の晴れ舞台の直後に出てきた言葉だけに、より一層の意味があるような気がします。
