ジョン・デーリーがまた仕出かしたみたいです。先週、米ノースカロライナ州にある「Hooters（フーターズ）」の店の外で泥酔して意識不明になっていたところを発見され、酔いが覚めるまでの間、近くの刑務所まで連行され一晩過ごしたとのこと。
ゴルフも私生活もうまくいかないデーリー。この長いトンネルの出口はあるのだろうか...。

デーリーは先月27日、友人数名と食事をし（彼のスポンサーでもあり、奇抜な服装をしたウェイターで有名な）Hootersに行ったとのこと。1杯多く飲みすぎたのか、疲労が溜まっていたデーリーは店の外に止めてあったプライベートバスで寝てしまった。
彼は疲労やストレスが溜まっている時は「目が開いて寝る」癖があるという。デーリーが雇用していたプライベートバスの運転手がそんなデーリーの姿を見て「死んでいるのではないか」と焦り、警察に電話してしまったという。そりゃ焦りますよ...。
「もし俺がそんな人を見つけたら、きっと同じことをしただろう。彼らは俺を守ろうとしていただけなんだ」とデーリー。
「分かってほしいのは、彼女に午後11:30頃電話をして、疲れていたからバスに戻って寝ようと思っていたんだ。酔っ払っていなかったとは言わない。何杯かは飲んだ。俺は友達に『疲れてて、酔ってるから寝に行く』と言ったんだ」
「バスの運転手が救急車を呼んだんだ。『何が起きてるんだ！？』と言ったら、『みんなあなたが死んだかと思って...』と。俺は疲れている時は目を開けて寝てしまうんだ。起こそうとしてもなかなか起きないことは、俺のことを知ってる奴だったら分かってたんだけどな」
警察の言い分は少し違っていて、デーリーは「非常に泥酔していて、非協力的だった」とのこと。仕方なく刑務所で一晩を過ごすことになってしまった。
デーリーの長いスランプはどこまで続くのだろうか。最後の優勝は2004年のビュイック・インビテーショナル。その優勝で２年間のツアー資格を得たが、それが切れた2006年以降はPGAツアーの最前線から徐々に姿を消している。今年は17試合に出場、予選通過はわずか5試合。バイキング・クラシックでの40位タイが一番良い成績だ。
「招待選手として出場しても、俺の場合は4、5試合連続でプレーできないと意味がないんだ。3、4試合立て続けにプレーできて初めて自分のリズムが生まれてくるんだ。俺はタイガーのように、1試合に出てポンッと勝てるような選手じゃないんだ」とデーリー。コンスタントに試合に出場するためにも、自国でプレーするよりヨーロッパツアーで転戦することを望んでいるそうだ。
「俺を心底応援してくれているファンには感謝している。俺を見捨てるなら、それも理解できる。でも俺はまだゴルフをしていかなければならない。生活をしていかなければならない。以前のような選手に戻れるかはわからないけど、頑張っていくしかないんだ」
「今の俺は全てがうまくいっていない。離婚裁定中で、子供の顔も見れてない。ああいうことが起きてしまったのは不運だったが、みんなが言ってることは馬鹿げている。自分がとった行動の全責任は取るけど、大したことじゃなかなったんだ」
酒は飲んでも、飲まれるな。彼のためにあるような言葉ですね。
