個人的には、PGAツアーのHPで流れるFootjoyのCMで毎日ように見ていたので、あまり「消えた」感はなかったが、言われてみると今年トーナメントではあまり名前を聞かくなったな...と。

ジョンソンが言う「彼ら」は地元アイオワの人々だ。今年5、6月に地元のアイオワ州全域を襲ったトルネードにより、多くの人は家も財産も失った。思わず目を疑ってしまうような暴風の被害の跡は、きっと遠くで戦うジョンソンの心にも深い傷を負わせたのだろう。

この後、ジョンソンは9月下旬にアイオワ大学のホームコースで、クリス・ディマルコ、トッド・ハミルトンらの協力を得て、チャリティイベントを開催している。もちろん、集まった募金は全て地元の人たちの復興に充てられた。
史上最高スコア（1オーバー）で勝ったマスターズは感動的なシーンだった。追いすがるタイガー・ウッズ、レティーフ・グーセン、ローリー・サバティーニを振り切り、2年間優勝から遠のいていた苦労人が悲願の初メジャー。高校、大学、プロと、決して第1戦級の選手としては認めてもらえず、それでもプロで食べていく道を選んだ。一時は資金繰りに困り、地元の保険会社（aegon社）が救いの手を差し伸べた。彼の活躍は「地元」なくしては語れないのだろう。
