昨年、コース外でのトラブルが続いたデイリー。11月にはPGAツアーから6ヶ月の出場停止処分を受け、2度のメジャー覇者も終わりかに見えましたが今回ばかりはさすがに心を入れ直しているようです。
Get in the Hole!でも何度かお伝えしている通り、出場停止処分を受けたデイリーは海を渡り欧州ツアーで8試合に出場。イタリアン・オープンでは2位タイに入るなど、欧州ツアーのポイントレース「Road to Dubai」の最終戦に残るための70名まであと一歩のところまで来ています。
デイリーは全英オープンを勝っていることから欧州でも根強い人気はあるのですが、以前から自身のTwitterでも語っているとおり「母国でプレーすることを望んでいる」のです。出場停止期間が終わり、セント・ジュード選手権にはスポンサーの推薦枠で出場できることとなり、更には７月末のビュイック・オープンにも推薦枠で出るようです。
復活の大きなきっかけになっているのは「ダイエット」。昨年まではゴルファーというより引退したアメフトの選手のような体型だったデイリーですが、胃を圧縮させる効果のある「ガストリックバンド」（肥満症治療に使用する弾性ゴムバンド）を取り付ける手術を行い、3ヶ月で22キロも減量したとか。「今、１週間で摂っている食事の量は昔の1日の量」だとか。一日の摂取カロリーはなんと1200kcal！
確かに、昨年までの彼の姿とは比べものにならないほどホッソリとしています。

「準備はできているよ。今までのように中途半端な気持ちではプレーしない。このままではPGAツアーでプレーできないのは分かっているし、だからこそ今までとは比べものにならないほど練習に取り組んでいる」とデイリー。
デイリーが最後にPGAツアーで優勝したのが2004年のビュイック・インビテーショナル。「飛ばす」という最も分かりやすい形でファンを魅了していたデイリー。今でも多くのファンに支えられていることは自覚しているようで、その人たちに再びプレーをすることで恩返しをしたい気持ちで一杯のようです。
「出場停止処分は適切だとは思わなかったけど、今更言っても何も始まらない。これを良い機会にしようと思っている。今は自分の身の回りのことはきっちりできている・・・（セント・ジュード選手権で）勝てれば最高。でもまたプレーできていることに感謝。どこでもいい。どこかでプレーしていられれば、今はそれだけでいいんだ」
