先週のチューリッヒ・クラシック・オブ・ニューオリンズ。ひそかにPCのリアルタイムスコアを眺めながら応援していた選手がジェリー・ケリー。ジェリー・ケリーやらケニー・ペリーやらデビッド・トムズやら、馴染みがなければ苗字なのか名前なのかごっちゃになりそうな選手について頻繁に書いていますね・・・。
先週、2日目に首位に立ち、最終日は後半に入って追いつかれるも最後まで自分のゴルフに徹して7年ぶりの優勝を手にしました。
ケリーにとって「自分のゴルフ」とは･･･。

先週の試合をテレビでご覧になっていた方は気付かれたかとは思いますが、今年43歳になるケリーはPGAツアーの中でも「飛ばない」選手の一人。しかもよく曲がる。先週もドライビング・ディスタンスが274.1で全体の66位、ドライビング・アキュレシー（FWキープ率）が62.5％で30位。なぜこれだけ飛ばない選手が勝てるのか。
「ショットの感覚が戻ってくれば勝負できると思っていた」と試合後のケリー。ここ3年近く、苦しみ続けたのはアイアンショットの精度だったのです。スイング改造を何度も繰り返したとのこと。2打目以降からでもPGAツアーのトップレベルで勝負できる・・・それを証明してくれたのです。
試合後、ケリーは家族の支え以外に、2名に感謝の言葉を送っていました。一人がそのスイング改造を見てきてくれたコーチのジム・シューマン氏。このシューマン氏はケリーの義理の兄でもあり、母校ウィスコンシン大学のヘッドコーチ。ケリーはウィスコンシン大の「ボランティアコーチ」としてシューマン氏のお手伝いもしているそうなのですが、今週の優勝は最大のサポーターからの一言がきっかけになっていたようです。
「これまでジムと一緒にスイングのパーツパーツを改善しながら、まずはアプローチ、そしてミドルアイアン、そしてロング、と徐々に見直してきたのですが、全てが同じタイミングでうまくいった時がなかった。でも今週の練習ラウンドで、ジムが俺のスイングを見て初めて『もうスイングは完璧だぞ』と言ってくたんだ。これはイケル！と自信が持てた」
もう一人が同じツアープロであり、同じウィスコンシン州出身のスティーブ・ストリッカー。同じ出身地で親近感を覚えたのか、この二人かなりの仲良しみたいで「お互い激励のメールを送り合う仲」とのこと。ケリーがグリーン周りでの悩みを打ち明けるとストリッカーは「パッティングのコーチ」として指導を繰り返してくれたそうなのです。ストリッカーは現在PGAツアーの平均パット数1位、スクランブリングで5位、とツアーで最もグリーン周りが得意な選手をコーチにした効果は大きかったようです。逆に、今年に入って勝てそうで勝ちきれなかった試合が続くストリッカーに対してはケリーが励ましの言葉をかけているとか。「俺が彼を必要だと感じている。彼も同じように思ってくれていればいいな」とケリー。
何より、ケリーの優勝は丸山茂樹（日本ツアーに戻っちゃいましたが）や今田竜二のように世界の舞台に出てしまうとどうしても飛距離コンプレックスを抱える日本人選手に大きな勇気を与えたのではないでしょうか。
弱点に目を向けないのではなく、強みを伸ばしていく。
これからPGAツアーを目指す日本人選手にとっても、貴重なメッセージだった気がします。
ジェリーは確かにドライバーが馬鹿っ飛びするタイプではありません、しかし彼は[飛ばない]ので]はなく[飛ばすことより球筋のコントロールを重視して飛ばさない]タイプなのです。
今年の１月ソニーオープンinハワイのプロアマで一緒にラウンドして付きっ切りでレッスンしてもらいました、彼は必要なら、またテストする必要がある時はドライバーを《振って》きます。３００は余裕で超える飛距離を持っています。それと彼は性格的に飛ばす事よりグリーン周りが好きなのです、見掛けによらず神経が細やかなタイプですのでショートゲームを大切にするのです。

What I wouldnt give to have a debate with you about this. You just say so many things that come from nowhere that Im pretty certain Id have a fair shot. Your weblog is great visually, I mean people wont be bored. But others who can see past the videos and the layout wont be so impressed with your generic understanding of this subject.
