これだけ世界中で競技者のいるスポーツが、なぜオリンピックスポーツではないのだろうか。長年の謎でした。今年に入りメディアもその疑問を投げかけ始め、いよいよゴルフ界のトップが動き始めました。

国際ゴルフ連盟(IGF)のメンバーでもあるR&Aチーフエグゼクティブのピーター・ドーソン(写真・左から2人目)とPGAツアー役員のタイ・ヴォータウ(右)は14日、スイスのIOC国際オリンピック委員会本部でゴルフを2016年から五輪競技としての開催要請を提出、IOCメンバーの前でプレゼンテーションを行ったとこのこと。
IGF側の論点は、
・ゴルフが国際競技であり、人種の多様性があること
・経済的な貢献、更にはチャリティ活動に積極的に取り組んでいること
・スポーツを通した若者の教育とその継続性にコミットしていること
などなど。
女子ソフトボールなどは今年の五輪で最後となったが、それは蓋を開けてみれば競技人口が著しく偏っているからだ。といってもゴルフも偏っている。アメリカ、オーストラリア、イギリス、スペイン、韓国(日本も入るのかな...)あたりが世界のトッププレーヤーの勢力図となっている。しかし、カミロ・ビジェガス(コロンビア)やアンヘル・カブレラ(アルゼンチン)などはビッグトーナメントで優勝し自国でのゴルフ人口増加に寄与している。その輪はこれからもっと広がっていくだろう。
「ゴルフは本当の意味でインターナショナルなスポーツだ。世界120カ国に6000万人のプレーヤーがいる。年齢に限らず、このゲームの素晴らしさを広げる努力は続いていて、その輪は広がっていくだろう」とヴォータウは言う。
このプレゼンで、IGF側はIOCにこの動画を見せたという。
タイガー・ウッズ、フィル・ミケルソン、ビジェイ・シン、セルヒオ・ガルシア、ロレーナ・オチョア、ビジェガス、アンソニー・キム、そして日本を代表する今田竜二が出演!超豪華どころか、まるでハリウッドばりの演出だ!!これでダメだったら、恐らく向こう100年はオリンピックスポーツになることはないだろう、と思えるくらい豪華なメンバーだ。
となると・・・IOCが断る理由は何があるのだろう?
ここが議論の分岐点なのだが、僕は個人的には絶対にゴルフはオリンピックスポーツとしてやるべきだと思う。しかし、反対する人の中には、「ゴルフは既に世界的に認知されているスポーツであり、いまさらオリンピックという半公共スポーツに出てくる必要はない」と言う。また、世界中から選手を集めた場合、何人のフィールドでやるんだ?それほど多くの選手を受け入れてくれるゴルフ場はどこにあるのか?などなど、個人競技であるが故に、確かに問題も多く付きまとう。
最後にゴルフがオリンピック競技として開かれたのは1904年大会だった。その大会を優勝したのはジョージ・ライオンというカナダ人の選手。しかも、この大会では77名のゴルファーが参加したのだが、うち74名はアメリカ人、4名がカナダ人だったのだ。現在、男女のワールドランキングトップ10(20名)だけを見ても12カ国の違う出身から成り立っている。ゴルフがいかに世界中に広がったかが分かる。
次の段階は来年3月までに質問一覧を回答し、返信すること。その時点で正式な要請となる。それまでにIGFは世界のトッププレーヤーたちと相談しながら試合のフォーマット、スケジュールなどを詰めていくとのこと。
