どうしてここまで盛り上がれるのかがたまに分からなくなる。羨ましくもある。まるで高校生の文化祭のようなノリだと感じる時もある。アメリカ人の団結力というか、一つのイベントを成功させるために観衆までが一致団結する力は凄まじいものがある。
先週のPGAツアー「FBRオープン」が開催された場所は、アリゾナ州スコッツデールという人口わずか25万人足らずの小さな街。年中過ごしやすい気候のためか、リタイアした富裕層の人が移住する場所でもあり、また大学（アリゾナ州立大）もあるため、若い世代と高齢者が混在する街なのだ。
PGAツアーの試合の中でも決して賞金額は高いわけではない。アメリカの田舎町で、しかも何百とあるTPCコースの一つで、年間何十と行われるPGAツアーの試合の一つでしかない。。。と思っていた自分が愚かだった。
1週間を通しての観客動員数を聞いて驚いた。約500,000人。
観客動員数50万人。これは4大メジャーを凌ぐ数字だ。日本でもいくら石川遼ブームと言われても、せいぜい一日1～2万人。このFBRオープンの名物ホール、16番パー3は今年リニューアルされて20,000人が常時観戦していたとか。沈み切ったこの国の経済状況とは反比例するような賑わいを見せていた。
50万の人がゴルフを観戦すると、どういう景色になるのか？象徴的な写真を幾つか。

これが16番パー3のスタジアム。一つのホールをここまで臨場感を出せると、プレーしている方もさぞかし気持ち良いのだろう。
50万人いれば、大渋滞。
赤いユニフォームを着ている人が目立ちますが、これは先日行われたアメフトの頂上決戦「スーパーボール」に地元のアリゾナ・カージナルスが出場したため、地元を応援する意味でも装っていたのでしょう。
こういう選手がいるんですよね、PGAツアーって。ベテラン、ビリー・メイフェアーはラウンド中にも関わらず、自前のカージナルスのユニフォームを取り出し、この16番ホールで着替えてしまったのです。これにはファンも大喜び！
この試合をテレビで見ていて、そしていろんなサイトの解説者の人たちの意見を読んでいて感じたことは、この試合は日本も含め世界中のゴルフ業界の関係者の模範になるべきだということ。日本ではJリーグの大宮、新潟やプロ野球の楽天が「地域密着型」のスポーツマーケティングで成功例を出している。ゴルフの成功例はこの大会だと思う。
こんな小さな街で行われている試合に50万人を収容できるヒントがいくつかあった。
１．選手が楽しむから、ファンが楽しめる
例年のことだが、16番ホールではお祭り騒ぎになっていた。なぜか？それは「役者」である選手たちが楽しんでいるからだった。先のメイフェアー以外にも、ババ・ワトソンがボールやバイザーをスタンドに投げ入れたり、客にお菓子（キャンディー）を投げ入れる選手もいた。形は何でもよくて、とにかく観客に向かって話し掛けている選手が多かった。ファンが盛り上がれば、選手もそれにつられて良いプレーを見せようとする。スーパーショットが生まれる。。。といった好循環ができている。
その始まりは「選手が楽しんでいる」ことを表現していることだと気付いた。つまり、はっきり言ってしまえば、予選をぎりぎり通過して優勝争い圏外に入ってしまえば、あと何打縮めるのかは関係なくて、残るホール（ラウンド）をプロのエンターテイナーとしてどうやってお客さんに楽しんでもらえるかを考えているということ。
全員が全員そうだとは言わないが、日本の男子ツアーだと成績が悪いと肩を落としてギャラリーに手も振らず去っていく選手はよく見かける。きっと文化的なものもあるかもしれない。ただ、「お客様あってのビジネス」と考えるのであれば、その客が喜ぶことをすることがプロの仕事であることは万国共通のはずだ。
２．地域を愛し、徹底的に大会の特徴を生かすこと
これだけ隔離された砂漠の中にある街に50万人を呼び込めた理由はやはり「地域」を意識したプロモーションにある。
例えば、
・アリゾナ・カージナルスのユニフォームを着て来場した人は入場料無料。
・会場に隣接した「バーズ・ネスト（Bird's Nest）」を設置してパーティを開催。「（ゴルフが終わって）日が暮れればパーティが始まる」と題し、有名なロックバンドのライブが開かれた。
わざわざゴルフ場まで足を運んでくれた人たちに徹底したサービスを提供している。日本でも女子ツアーの試合の後にライブを開催していましたね。FBRオープンの無料入場企画などは、地域の人のために開催しているということを意識しているし、これぞ裾野を広めるための誘致施策なのかもしれないですね。
それと同時に、この1月末の微妙な時期に開催されていることをプラスに考えていますよね。この大会は、「冬を避けたい」人たちにとってゴルフも見れて、お酒も飲めて、外で騒げる最高のバカンスになるのでしょう。「冬だから客が来ない」のではなく、「他が寒いからできること」の答えがこの大会の催しや盛り上がりに直結しているのだと感じた。
選手でもあり、PGAツアーの政策決定委員の一人でもあるデビッド・トムズはこう言っている。
「俺は、他のPGAツアーの大会はこの大会を模範にすべきだと言ってきた。特に似たようなマーケットサイズで行われている試合にとっては、どうすれば大規模な大会にできるのかを参考にすべきだ、と。これだけ人が集まったら、嫌でも広告もスポンサーも売れる。この地域のビジネスと人にとって、これは一大イベントなんだ」
タイガー・ウッズが毎年30試合も出てくるとは到底思えないし、昨年末からティム・フィンチェム会長が「予定していなかった試合でも年に数試合出て欲しい」と呼びかけても、すぐに効果が出るようなものでもない。ましてや、欧州ツアーの追随で、現にPGAツアーの常連だった選手たちは少しずつ海外に逃げ出している。この現状の中で、FBRオープンの成功に見習うべき点は多々あるのではないだろうか。
正直、このご時世、黙っててもお客さんで埋まるゴルフの試合はマスターズくらいしかないだろう。「ゴルフ＝エンターテイメント」であることを前面に押し出していかないと、生き残りはますます厳しくなる。
ゴルフをゴルフとして見せているだけでファンの心を掴める時代は終わったのかもしれない。
そう感じさせてくれた50万人の観衆だった。
