恐らく日本ではあまり注目されないかもしれない今週のPGAツアー「ビュイック・オープン」には王者、タイガー・ウッズが出場してきます。全英オープンではプロ転向後2度目の予選落ちを喫したタイガーにとって、ここは「立て直し」の一戦として挑んでくるようです。

タイガーは今週のビュイック・オープンを皮切りに、来週のWGCブリヂストン・インビテーショナル、再来週の全米プロ選手権と3週連続での出場となります。メジャー前に2週間連続して出場するのは自身初めてのこと。それが吉と出るのか凶と出るのかはやってみないと分かりませんが、「吉」との見方が多いようです。
ビュイック・オープンの開催地はミシガン州の名門「ウォーウィック・ヒルズG&CC」で、森林に囲まれたフェアウェイがタイトなコース形態になっているのです。全米プロに向けてドライバーの精度を試すには絶好の舞台でもあり、全英の失敗から立ち直るためには8度出場して2勝、全て11位以内に入っているコースで自信を取り戻すのも目的の一つなのでしょう。
また、今週の大会スポンサーが「ビュイック（ゼネラル・モーターズ）」であったことも出場する理由の一つだったのかもしれません。昨年まで9年間、タイガーをサポートし続けたゼネラル・モーターズは、破産に追い込まれたためにタイガーとの関係を一年早く断ち、現在は米政府の援助をもとに再生中。大会スポンサーの継続も困難で、今年のビュイック・オープンが最後になるとも言われています。「我々とタイガーは9年間、素晴らしい関係を構築できたと思っている。（出場）がタイガーなりの意思表示なのかもしれません」とビュイック－GMのラリー・ペック氏は言います。
全米プロ選手権の後は1週間挟み、FedEx Cupプレーオフが始まります（早いですね・・・）。もしプレーオフ4試合に出場することになると、最初の3戦が連続週開催のため今週から7週間で6試合、9週間で7試合戦うことになるかもしれないのです。ちなみに、2年前のFedEx Cupプレーオフでタイガーは初戦をスキップしながら総合優勝を果たしました（ポイント配分の制度が今年のものとは違ったという理由もあったかもしれませんが・・・）。
この「強行」スケジュールは体力的に持つのでしょうか？膝の痛みが再発しなければ良いですが・・・。いずれしろ、今週がタイガーの「完全復活」に向けての第一歩。どんな戦いになるのか、全英リコー女子と合わせて注目したいですね。

・ビュイック・オープンでの32ラウンド中、タイガーは31ラウンド連続でアンダーパーを記録。最初に出場した1997年の第1ラウンドのみ「72」のイーブンパー。
・アンダーパーで回っている31ラウンドの合計スコアは137アンダーで1大会平均17.125アンダーを記録。
・2005年に記録した11アンダー、「61」はコースレコード（2001年、ビリー・メイフェアも記録）。
