最終日、ストリッカーが「77」と大崩れしてくれたこともあり、ペレスが3アンダー「69」で回り、通算33アンダーでツアー初優勝。1997年にプロ転向した期待の大器が遂にブレークスルーした試合になった。

このボブ・ホープ・クライスラー・クラシック、5日間競技となっていて、ただでさえ忍耐力が求められる試合なのに、著名人（芸能人）が同じ組で回るという異例のプロアマ形式。この一風変わったスタイルを敬遠するトッププロも多くなく、現に今年は世界ランキングトップ15名が全員欠場。
そんな中、ペレスの優勝を予想できた人はいなかっただろう。ペレスといえばその愉快なニックネーム（「Double Pまたは「PP（ピーピー＝おしっこ）」）かツアー屈指の「気の短さ」で知られている選手。同じ組でラウンドしている選手をせかす（少なくとも自分は早く打つ）ようなそぶりも見せ、ミスショットへの苛立ちは隠さない。起伏の激しい性格が世間に知れ渡ったのが2002年AT&Tペブルビーチプロアマの最終日。首位でスタートしながらそのリードを守れず、テレビ中継が入っている時間帯にも関わらず苛立ちからクラブを真っ二つに折ってしまうという珍事件を起こしてしまった。
それでも優勝できるだけの素質はあった。1993年の世界ジュニア選手権ではタイガー・ウッズを8打差押さえて優勝。PGAツアーのルーキーシーズンでは獲得賞金1億円を突破するなど明るい話題の方が多かった。しかし、練習の時間よりテレビゲームやビールを飲む方に時間を費やしオフの下積みもまともにしてこなかった。そのせいか、ここ数年は「平均的な選手」として、それ以上の活躍は期待されていなかった。
ペレスはこのオフに「今までで最も真剣にトレーニングに取り組んだ」と言うように、今季にかける意気込みがボブ・ホープでの勝利に繋がったのだろう。ひた向きに頑張る者は報われる...そう証明してくれるかのような逆転勝利だった。
ということで、僕もいい加減「練習なんて無駄」と決め付けず、そろそろレッスンプロに一度や二度ついてもらって基本から教えてもらおうかと思う。
