先日もお伝えしたWGCブリヂストン・インビテーショナルでのスロープレーに関するタイガーのコメント。一部抜粋していますが、訳しておきました。

タイガー：素晴らしい対決だった。今日吹いていた風はパディー（ハリントン）がリードを守るために臨んでいたものだっただろうし、俺はどうにかして出だしで何打か追いつこうと考えていた。幸先の良いスタート切れて、フロント9は良いスコアを叩き出すことができた。
でもパディーは諦めなかった。決してミスもしなかったし、11番ではバーディを拾って、俺が13、14番で連続ボギー。彼は14番でパーで凌いで･･･16番までは最高のバトルだった。
Q. 16番のグリーンに立っていて、彼が崩れていってしまうのを見ていてどんな気分だった？これまで、最後の最後まで激戦を繰り広げていて、ああいう形で終わってしまったことはあった？
タイガー：気付いていたかは分からないけど、我々の組はスロープレーの警告を受け、時間制限を設けられたんだ。ライをしっかりと見る時間があれば、パディーはあんなショットは打っていなかったと思う。でも時間制限があったから彼は構えてすぐ打たなければいけなかった。
Q. ミスしたアプローチの話？
タイガー：そう、池に入れてしまった一打。でも俺には理解できない。結局、彼は池の逆側のフェアウェイまで戻ってドロップをして、また戻って来た。そして我々が17番のティショットを打った時、前の組は18番のティグラウンドから歩きだしたところだったんだ。よく分からないね、その辺は。
Q. ルールオフィシャルはラウンドの早い段階からあなたの組の時間を計っていたようです。どの時点で時間制限が設けられたのですか？
タイガー：6番ホールで、まずスピードアップするように言われた。7番にいた時、ちょうど前の組が8番ホールからティオフしていったからそこでは追いついたと思ったんだ。そして16番で時間制限が設けられた。
Q. 誰に通達された？
タイガー：ジョン・パラモール
Q. フロント9を「30」（5アンダー）で回って、それでもハリントンはしぶとく粘っていました。「一体、何をすれば振り切れるんだ？」と頭をよぎりましたか？
タイガー：いや、とにかく我慢強くプレーすることだけだね。スティーブにも言ったんだけど、勝つためには後半も最低2バーディ取らないと難しい、と。パディーは恐らく1、2、3アンダーで後半回ってくると思った。俺も止まるわけにはいかなかった。でも結果、2つ落としてしまった。
パディーは本当に粘り強い選手だ。メジャーを3勝していて、しかも最後の2つのバックナインは確か「32」で回っていたから、絶対に息絶えることはないと思っていた。
Q. 16番の話に戻りますが、あのスーパーショットでOKバーディの距離に寄せたことがハリントンのプレーに何かしら影響したのでは？
タイガー：それはないと思う。時間制限があったからだと思う。本来であれば、3打目の時にもっと時間を取って、どこに落として、次のショットまで考えてプレーしていたはず。そして4打目はその場に行ってすぐに打たなければならなかった。あのショットは焦って打つようなライではないよ。じっくり周りを見て、どのように攻めるかを考えてから打たないと。急かされたことで彼は何回かミスをしたのは確かだよね。
Q. ミネソタでの全米プロ選手権に向けて一言。？
タイガー：すぐ切り替えないとね。明日にはコースに出てる。お祝いは一瞬で終わっちゃうね。
Q. 土日の2ラウンドを「65－65」で締めくくったわけですが、最後に連続してこれだけ良い形でフィニッシュできたのはいつ以来ですか？
タイガー：俺がここで記録した65－61というのも悪くないとは思うんだけどな（笑）。いや、でも週末は少しトリッキーなコンディションだったし、その中でも数ホール流れを掴んでスコアを伸ばせたからね。良かったと思う。
Q. ファイヤーストーンCCでは史上初となる同コースで7勝目になりました。これまでに聞かれているとは思うけど、率直な感想は？
タイガー：良い気分だよ。このコースはいつ来ても安心してプレーができる。ティショットもアプローチも、そしてグリーンのラインも、他のところと比べると簡単に見える。「コースが合っている」とはこういうことなんだろうね。俺の結果を見ても一目瞭然でしょ。
Q. 過去20年以上、誰もペナルティーを科されたことのないスロープレーのペナルティー。それでも彼は16番で「焦って打つ」必要があったのですか？
タイガー：ミスショットをしてしまうと、ちょっと考えている間に最初の「注意」を受けてしまう。そして次にもし変なところに打ってしまうと1打罰が決定する。時間をかけるとギャラリーはうるさくなってくるし、カメラのシャッターも気になるし、風の方向も変わってしまうし、良いことは何一つない。（オフィシャルは）そんな状況は考慮してくれないから。ルールだから。
Q. それでも、これだけの人がいて最終組で最後までもつれていたという状況を考えると、一打罰を受けるというのも選択肢の一つにあるのですか？
タイガー：それは分からないな。時と場合によるね。だって、これだけの人がロープ内に入って動いき回っていて、叫んでいる人もいて、風の方向が変わる可能性があって...それは打つタイミングとしては最悪だし、アドレスから一歩下がって時間を取るよね。そうしたら次からは1打罰だけどね。
Q. （全米プロに向けて）何か修正していくものはありますか？
タイガー：これまでと同じように、修正してきたことをやり続ける。それで十分でしょ（笑）。
Q. 今回の試合は8番アイアンのショットで勝ったのか、パドレイグが急かされたからなのか、どちらですか？
タイガー：両方。俺のショットも彼にプレッシャーを与えたのかも。それでも、（ハリントンは）あの場面（16番）は悪くてもボギーで切り抜けていたはず。
Q. 次のWGC（世界選手権大会）は12時間も時差のある場所で開催されます。「WGC」の冠がついた大会が世界中で開催されことについて意見をお聞かせください。
※今年から上海で開催されていたHSBCチャンピオンズがWGC大会に昇格。11月5日開幕。
タイガー：昔のアメリカンエクスプレス選手権（今のCA選手権）は世界中を回って開催されていた。俺もいろんな国に飛んだよ。一昔前までWGCの試合会場は動き回っていたし、今回アジアで一つ開かれることは素晴らしいことだと思う。俺もアジアでは相性が良いので、どんな結果になるかは見ててくれよ。
Q. 2年前、ここで勝ってから翌週のPGA（全米プロ）も勝ちましたが、メジャーの直前に優勝争いをして、ましてや優勝すると、肉体的にも精神的にも厳しくないですか？
タイガー：いいや、それはない。なぜなら自分のいつものルーティーンを変えないから。（今週は）月曜日、火曜日に練習ラウンドをして、水曜日はオフにする。少しだけ練習をする程度。月曜と火曜はコースを歩いてフィーリングを確かめておく、そして水曜日は何もしない。
Q. 予選ラウンドを終えて、今日のようにビハインドで始まり、観客も多く、風が吹き始めている時はどのようにして集中力を維持しているのですか？
タイガー：やるしかないんだよ。集中するしかない、それ以外に選択肢はないんだ。勝ちたいのであれば、全力を尽くすことに集中する。特にこれだけのフィールドになれば、そしてその中でも対戦しているのがパディーであればなお更。自分の世界に入っていくしかないんだ。パディーも俺もどちらかというとあまり話しながらプレーをする方ではない。そういう意味では今日はとても静かなラウンドだった。でも二人とも集中していたよ。
Q. パドレイグは18番のグリーン上で「また対戦しよう」と言ったそうですが。
タイガー：そうだね、彼にもあの場では言ったんだ。（レフリーの）ジョン（パラモール）が素晴らしいバトルの間に入ってしまったことは残念でならなかった、と。16ホールの間、最高のバトルを繰り広げていて、ああいうことになってしまった。でもパディーと俺は必ずまた対戦するよ。
Q. （全米プロ選手権初日の）木曜日？
タイガー：いやいや、木曜日の1ラウンドで勝負は決まらないから。でもパディーと俺はこれまでに何度も対戦している。ダンロップフェニックスでも、ここでも、そしてまたどこかで必ず激突する時が来るよ。
Q. それに似た質問で、才能があるけどそれほど練習に打ち込まない選手もいれば、パドレイグのように努力して這い上がってくる選手もいる。どちらかというと後者の方が尊敬できますか？
タイガー：もちろん。もちろんだよ。みんな、「誰を模範にすればいいですか？」とか「誰のプレーを見ればいいですか？」と聞いてくるけど、俺はいつもパディーやジム・フューリックやビジェイ・シンと言うんだ。彼らは上達するためにとにかく努力をする。パディーやジムはビジェイほどの飛距離はないけど、彼らがコース上でどのように考えてプレーをしているか、コース上のマネジメントは見ているだけで勉強になると思う。特にジュニアの選手たち。
それとパディーのひた向きさ。彼は（コーチの）ボブ・トーランスと何時間も練習し、雪の中でも練習に励み、全ては上達するためには何でもする。予選落ちをしても、彼は練習場に週末も出て翌週の大会に備えている。
俺はそういう選手を尊敬する。そうしなければ上手くなんてなれない。自分から勝ち取らなければいけないんだ。パディーはその最たる例で、毎日コツコツと、何かに取り組んでいる。
Q. 先日、ブリヂストンはこの大会のスポンサーとして5年間契約を延長し、このファイヤーストーンCCで開催すると発表しました。
タイガー：異論はないよね（笑）
