待ちに待ったタイガー・ウッズの姿が見られるかも...そう思って月曜日、リッツカールトンGCに足を運んだファンも多かったとか。水曜日からトーナメント形式の「WGCアクセンチュアマッチプレー選手権」が始まるが、残念ながらこの日、タイガーの姿は見られなかった。
しかし、彼のキャディは着々と準備を進めていたそうです。

スティーブ・ウィリアムズ。一人でコースを歩き、ボスのためにグリーンのスピード、傾斜、想定できるピンポジションをチェックしていたとのこと。スティーブにとっても8ヶ月ぶりの実戦となるだけに、入念に確認しておきたかったのだろう。
それにしても、このスティービー（タイガーはこう呼んでいる）、ボスの不在中に一時は渦中の人にもなった。タイガーの最大のライバルでもあるフィル・ミケルソンを「愚劣な奴」呼ばわりし、
「俺は好きではない。あいつは俺に何の敬意もはらわない。だから俺もあいつを尊敬することはない。お互い馬が合わないのは当たり前のこと」と、チャリティイベントで暴言を吐いてしまった。
お互いを「尊重」することを重んじるゴルフというスポーツで、このような発言は前代未聞。ミケルソンは「彼の発言を耳にし、改めてボーンズ（ミケルソンのキャディ、ジム・マッケイの愛称）のような紳士が俺のバッグを担いでくれていることを幸運に思う」と反論。
休養中だったタイガーも聞きかねたのか「適切な発言ではなかった」とコメントし、スティーブを責めた。「クビ」になるまでの大事には至らなかったが、かなり際どかったとの見方もあった。また、スティーブの意見はタイガーのものではないことを明確にした。
タイガーのコメントで収まったかにも思えるが、不穏な空気が流れたまま実際に同じ会場で遭遇するとどういうシーンになるのか...素通りするのか。軽い挨拶くらいはするのか...。一触即発ってことはないと思いますが...。
今週のWGCアクセンチュアマッチプレー選手権はいろんな見所がありそうです。
