先週末、日本では全英女子オープンが大いに盛り上がっていたが、アメリカでは男子ツアーの準メジャー「WGCブリヂストン・インビテーショナル」が行われていた。世界中から80名のトッププロが参戦。日本からは星野英正が参戦、首位と13打差の48位。ま、こんなもんでしょ。
全英女子オープンの優勝賞金は約3,400万円、このWGCは約1億4,400万円（すごいなぁ...）。やはりアメリカではこちらが「目玉」の試合だったようだ。
優勝したのは昨年3月のアーノルド・パーマー・インビテーショナル以来、意外にも自身初のWGC（世界ゴルフ選手権）勝利となったビジェイ・シン。

この勝利でビジェイは世界ランクを4位まで上げてくる。最終日は同スコアでスタートした世界No.2フィル・ミケルソンが終始リードを保っていたが、最後で失速。ビジェイはスチュワート・アップルビーとリー・ウェストウッドを辛くも1打差振り切ったものの最後の最後まで冷や冷やさせる内容だった。最終18番、優勝のかかったパーパットはわずか90cm。
「最後、あそこで決められるとは思わなかった」とビジェイ。
おいおい。。。正気か、ビジェイ。
今年のビジェイはちょっとおかしい。パッティングがおかしい。全米オープンの2日目出だしのホールで4パットするなど、パッティングでの自信のなさを露呈している。この最終日も30パットを要し、4日間を通しても1.2～2.5メートルのパットを19回中9つしか決められなかった。先週は「1～1.5メートルのパットをずっと練習していた」と言うビジェイ。原因はパターにもあったようで、短いパターから今週はここ数年間使い続けている中尺の「ベリーパター」に代えた。当分はパターを代えない方がよさそうだ。
そして、ミケルソン。。。最後にやらかしてくれるミケルソンが健在だった。

14番ホールまでノーボギーと順調に首位を守っていたミケルソン。こちらも初のWGCタイトルがちらついたのか、最後の4ホールでなんと3ボギー。見事なまでの自滅。「63、64であるべきスコアを70にしてしまっている」とミケルソン。結果、ミケルソンはビジェイに2打差をつけられ、レティーフ・グーセンと並んで4位タイに終わった。

相変わらず終盤にもろさを見せるミケルソン。パッティングが完全復調へのカギとなるビジェイ。タイガーが故障者リスト入りで今週の全米プロ選手権はまたとないチャンス。今季最後の大一番に向けて、少々（？）後味の悪い前哨戦となってしまった。
