昨日、「タイガーの対戦相手」ジョーンズの記者会見が開かれた。PGAツアー常連の取材陣にとっては「こいつは一体誰だ？」と思った人が多かったのだろう。いろんな質問が飛び交い、「ブレンダン・ジョーンズってこんな気さくな人だったのか！？」と思ってしまうほどヒューモアに溢れる内容だったので紹介しておきます。

Q:最初に、今週、あなたの周りは騒がしいですね。まずは一言いただけますか？
ジョーンズ：いつもなら日本人の記者に囲まれてるけど、これは大事だよ。この時間を楽しもうと思っているよ。
Q:64位の座が確定していて、タイガーには出場してほしかったですか？当然ですけど、水曜日の組は世界中が注目することになります。
ジョーンズ：64位というランキングで、いずれにしろ1位、2位、3位のどれかとは当たることになっていたわけで、せっかくこれだけの長旅をして来たんだから、同じヤラれるならタイガーにヤラれたいとは思っていたからね。
これは一生に一度のチャンスなんだ。本当に。興奮してるし、緊張もしてる。何よりトップ64位に入れて本当に、本当に良かったと思っている。去年末からランキングを見ていたんだけど、全くプレーをしてなかったから順位がずるずると後退してたしね。
Q:タイガーが出場を発表したことはどうやって知りましたか？
ジョーンズ：今、オーストラリアで家を建て替えていて、ちょうど工事の人たちが朝早くに来てたんだ。俺の妻がゴルフをしない友達からメールをもらって、ブレンダンは64位だから行けるんじゃない！？ってね。

Q:でも、現実的に、勝機はどれくらいあると思っていますか？
ジョーンズ：まー、俺はオーストラリア人だから、僅かな可能性はあると思っている（笑）。もちろん、ダークホースだということは分かっている。でも俺には失うものは何もない。普段より積極的なプレーができると思う。どれくらい勝機があるかって？ちょっとはあるんじゃないか。でも何パーセントとかは言えないかな。

ジョーンズ：まず、レンタカーなんてないし、選手に車が与えられるなんて境遇じゃないよね。自分たちで昼飯も買わなきゃいけないし。メディアも一般的に言って、アメリカほどの規模ではないかな。
でも日本ツアーはとっても居心地がいいし、日本は外国人にとって過ごしやすい場所だよ。俺はほとんど日本語話さないけど、ほとんど英語を話せない日本人相手でもなんとかなってるんだ。人はとてもフレンドリー。ゴルフ場もいいコースが多いし、俺が見た中ではグリーンの整備は世界で一番いいんじゃないかな。
Q:去年の対戦相手は誰だったの？そしてギャラリーはどれくらいだった？
ジョーンズ：去年はアダム・スコットと回って、たぶん一握りのオーストラリア人たちが見てたかな。でもそれくらいだよ。あと、アダム目当ての若い女子が数名いたかもしれないね。（笑）
Q:石川遼について。あなたは日本でもプレーしているわけで、タイガーのような注目度だそうだけど、本当なの？
ジョーンズ：石川遼は恐らく今日本で最も注目されている人だよ。俳優、アスリート関係なく。今、彼はキング、いや、プリンス（王子）なんだ。ビジュアルもいい、メディア受けもいい、ギャラリーにも優しい。こんな三拍子揃った選手はいないよ。そして、もちろん、それを裏付けるゴルフの実力がある。

でも日本は本当にいいところなんだ。3試合出場して、3週間家に帰り、また2試合出場して、4週間戻って...。自分の家で過ごせるのは貴重なこと。そして、日本の文化も大好きなんだ。だから今日本でプレーしていることに非常に満足しているし、ハッピーなんだ。
Q:過去にオーストラリア出身の選手がこの大会でタイガーを破って見出しになっていますが、その「先輩」たちと話す機会はありました？
ジョーンズ：いや、ニック・オハーンにもピーター・オマリーにもまだ話はできていないんだ。でもスティーブン・エイムズとは話して、いいアドバイスをもらったよ（笑）。あなたの質問に答えるなら、「いいえ、話していません」。
