一昨日の夜から誰がどこで何ラウンド目をプレーしているのかが全くフォローできない状態。初日、大雨の中でスタートしたタイガー・ウッズ。
FWキープ率、パーオン率ともに安定しているのに、降り続く雨の量で変わるグリーンのスピードに対応しきれていないようですね。タイガーが調子の悪い時の典型的なパターン。反対に首位を走るリッキー・バーンズは全選手中、雨の中でプレーしていない幸運な8名の一人。それだけが差ではないが「雨」がスコアメイクに大きな要因になっているのは言うまでもない。
3日目にようやく予選ラウンドを終えたタイガーは、通算3オーバー、首位とは11打差の位置で折り返した。タイガーが優勝することとなれば、1975年にルー・グラハムが達成した大会史上最多打数差からの逆転記録に並ぶ。「そうなればいいね」と苦笑したタイガーの顔はどこか諦めの表情にも見えました。

第１ラウンドの4オーバーが出遅れた大きな原因と挙げています。毎日グリーンの状態が変わっているため、「普通の全米オープンとは事情が違う」と語った。
タイガーのラウンド後のインタビューです。
「普通の全米オープンではないことは確か。・・・残念なことに俺の調子の良さがスコアに反映されていない。でもそういう時もある。まだ36ホール、あと3日間くらいプレーするだろ（笑）？いつもの全米と一緒だよ。我慢して、我慢して、それがどういう結果になるか」
「ショットの調子は良い。幾つかパットを沈めていれば全く違う結果になっていたはず。・・・グリーンがものすごく遅くてボコボコの状態。思い切り打ってカップをオーバーすると返しのパットが難しくなる。それだけはしたくない。それが全米オープンの難しさ」
「昨日（大会2日目）が悪すぎた。俺と同じ時間帯に出た選手たちのベストスコアは1オーバー。あの（雨の）状況を考えると良いスコアだったし、俺の平均的なスコアから考えるとそれくらいで回ってくるべきだった。でも4オーバー。全米オープンを勝つための（初日の）スコアではない」
「パットを信じられない強さで打たなければいけないのが苛々する。打ちすぎた後のことを考えると、そんなに強くは打てないんだ。でも打たないと入らないグリーンになっている。これもきっと『調整』しなければいけないことだと思う。今日だってプレーをしている間にグリーンは更に遅くなっていったしね。その都度、調整していかないといけないんだろうな」
