というのも、この人が勝つと思っていたし、やっぱり勝って欲しかったからなのかな、、、と。

同じ組で回ったハンター・メイハンは試合後こう振り返っています。
「俺はフィルを応援していた。彼が今何を思い、どんな気持ちでプレーしているのか、俺には想像もできない。今まで、フィルがあそこまで張りつめた空気を発しているのは見たことがない。彼の素振りを見ているだけで伝わってくるものがあった。凄まじい集中力だったし、あそこまで粘ったことは見ていて誇りに思った。一人の男があそこまで必至に頑張って優勝杯とそれ以外にも何か大きなものを勝ち取ろうとしている姿は見ている方が励まされた」
エイミーさんは大会期間中、フィルに何度も携帯のメールを送っていたそうです。
「そのトロフィーを病室に飾りたい」と。
トロフィーの代わりにミケルソンが持って帰ったものは、家族と一緒に苦難を乗り越える覚悟と家族愛でした。エイミーさんの手術の経過次第では長期間試合に出場しない可能性もあるとミケルソンは公言しています。
