初日を5アンダー、２位タイで回ってきたワトソン。ラウンドを終えて記者会見の部屋に戻ってきたワトソンは至って冷静に、淡々と話し始めました。
ターンベリーに戻ってこれた喜び、「優勝できる」だけの練習を重ねてきたこと、ラウンドしながら1977年のターンベリーでの優勝と一打一打を思い出していたこと・・・。
まるで自分の世界を満喫していて、その世界観は本人にしか分からないような空気を発していたワトソン。そしてこう切り出したのです。
「俺がどういうプレーをするか？それだろ？お前らはそれが知りたいのは、残り3日間、俺がどうプレーするかが知りたいんだろ？そんなの分かるわけないだろ（笑）。全く検討もつかないよ」

「プレッシャーに耐えられるか？そりゃ分からんよ。分からない。優勝争いをしているか？分からない。スイッチが付いてプレッシャーを感じずにプレーできるかもしれない。はたまたプレッシャーが大きすぎて潰れるかもしれない」

風も熟知し、コースの落としどころを把握し、グリーン上の傾斜を全て理解し・・・残っている選手でこの舞台で勝っているのはワトソンのみ。
本人の言葉は真実だと思う。「プレッシャー」。自分との闘い以外、相手がいないのではないでしょうか。
