次のどれかに当たる場合、球は「紛失」したものとみなされる。
a.プレーヤーのサイドやそのキャディーが球を探し始めてから５分間以内に、球が見つからないか、またはプレーヤーが自分の球であると確認できないとき。
b.初めの球(オリジナルボール)があると思われた場所か、その場所よりもホールに近い地点からプレーヤーが暫定球をストロークしたとき(規則27-2b参照)。
c.プレーヤーがストロークと距離の罰(規則27-1a)のもとに別の球をインプレーにしたとき。
d.見つからない球が局外者によって動かされていたり(規則18-1)、あるいは障害物の中(規則24-3)、異常なグラウンド状態(規則25-1c)、ウォーターハザード内(規則26-1)にあることが分っているか、ほぼ確実であるという理由からプレーヤーが別の球をインプレーにしたとき。
e.プレーヤーが取り替えられた球をストロークしたとき。
誤球のプレーに使われた時間は球を探すために許される5分間には入れない。

「マーカー」とはストロークプレーで競技者のスコアを記録するよう委員会によって指名された人をいい、マーカーには同伴競技者がなることもできる。マーカーは審判員ではない。
