全英オープン2日目が既にスタートしていて、タイガー・ウッズ、石川遼の組もスタート。初日の後半に猛チャージを見せ5アンダーでスタートした久保谷健一ですが、13番のティショットがロストボールになってしまい痛恨のダブルボギー。3アンダーまで落としています。
日本時間17日22:43現在、5アンダーで単独トップに立っているのは午前中のタフなコンディションの中「68」でラウンドしたスティーブ・マリーノ。それでも3アンダー、4アンダーに主力選手が並んでいてまだ一転二転ありそうです。
初日の5アンダーで周囲を驚かせた59歳のトム・ワトソン。5度の全英オープン、2度の全英シニアオープン優勝者は大会開幕前日にリンクスコース攻略法を聞かれてこのように言っていました。
「なにより、リンクスコースで勝つためには的確なコースマネジメントが要求される。その中で必要なのが、異なる風でプレーした経験、これがカギになる。全英に初めて出場するルーキーたちはここのクロスウィンド、方向が変わる風を経験していない。ゴルフで最も大事なのは距離感だ。ここで吹く風の中でその距離感をどのようにして出して行くか・・・金曜日に吹くであろう北、北西のクロスウィンドにどのように対応するか、ルーキーたちにとってはそれがカギになるだろうね」
ワトソンの言葉は重みがあるというか、経験則からくる持論に説得力があってまるでどこかの教授の話を聞いているような気分になります。「風」なんですね・・・。
そして、初日を1オーバーで終えたタイガー。彼のコメントも気になる一言がありました。
「ワトソン？すごいよね。でも、今日のスコア、上位にいる選手を見ていると、年配の選手が来ている。彼らはこのようなゴルフを熟知している。トム、カルク（マーク・カルカベッキア）、そして（マーク・）オメイラ・・・どうやってプレーするかを知っているんだよ」
まるで自身がリンクスコースの攻略法を知らないかのようなコメント。それだけ、「経験」がものをいうということなのかもしれません。
そして、2日目を見ていて、この2つのキーワードがより説得力あるものになってきています。経験のある選手でさえ今日から吹き始めた強風に苦戦を強いられています。
この２つのキーワード、最終日の最後まで覚えておきたいと思います。
