ライダーカップがまもなく開幕。初日は午前中がフォーサム形式で2人1組で1つのボールを交互に打っていく。注目されていた組合せが開幕前夜に発表され、3連敗中のアメリカはフィル・ミケルソンと若手アンソニー・キムのペアを第1組にラウンドさせる。

今年急成長を遂げたキムと世界No.2のミケルソンの組はエキサイティングなコンビだ。立ち向かうのは今季メジャー2勝のパドレイグ・ハリントンと安定した成績を残しているロバート・カールソン。いきなり第1組から火花が散りそうな組合せだ。
フォーサムは合計4組、各チーム8名で争われる。残りの組合せは次の通り。

フィル・ミケルソン＆アンソニー・キム VS パドレイグ・ハリントン＆ロバート・カールソン
○第2組：
ジャスティン・レナード＆ハンター・メイハン VS ヘンリック・ステンソン＆ポール・ケーシー

スチュワート・シンク＆チャド・キャンベル VS ジャスティン・ローズ＆イアン・ポールター
○第4組：
ケニー・ペリー＆ジム・フューリック VS セルヒオ・ガルシア＆リー・ウェストウッド
最終組も面白い闘いになりそうだ。ガルシアは過去のライダーカップで8度フォーサムプレーに出場していて、一度も負けていない。うち2回はウェストウッドとのコンビ。だがケニー・ペリーは開催地バルハラCCは彼にとっては「裏庭」のようなコースで、地元の後押しも受けることになる。
改めて組合せを眺めていると、実績だけで見ればいかにもヨーロッパチームの方が有利に映る。しかし、今回アメリカチームはタイガー・ウッズ不在もあり、完全に追う立場になっている。精神的にも気軽にプレーができ、且つギャラリーの後押しがあれば形勢が逆転してもおかしくはない。
まずは初日を終えたところで大体のパワーバランスは見えてくるだろう。個人的にはアメリカチームには個性派が揃っていて、応援してみたい。
