３日目を終えて誰もが上位２名のいずれかの優勝を期待していたのではないだろうか。
単独首位に立ったのはプロに転向してまだ１ヶ月も経っていない２３歳ステイシー・ルイス。幼少期からの骨髄の病で背中にボルトを５本入れるという大きな怪我を乗り越えプロ入り。突如現れたヒロインに観客は大声援で後押しし、「アメリカンドリーム」実現を夢見ていたのはルイス本人だけではなかったはず。
２位には華やかのは衣装だけではないことを証明したいポーラ・クリーマー。今季はすでに２勝、３日目のラウンドもどこかほどよい緊張感の中、のびのびとプレーしていて「勝つ雰囲気」を持っていたかに見えた。「ようやく」初メジャーが手の届くところまできていた。
もちろん、今回が最後の全米女子オープンとなったアニカ・ソレンスタムに期待した人も多かっただろう。最終１８番パー５での３打目を直接放り込んでしまったショットは、女王の引退を飾るべく感動的なシーンだった。
しかし、誰よりも堅実に、淡々とプレーしたのが１９歳の若者だった。韓国出身インビー・パークは周囲がスコアを崩していくのを横目に、着実に２アンダー、７１で回り２位に４打差をつける圧勝。しかも、韓国の大先輩、朴セリが１０年前に樹立した大会最年少優勝記録を塗り替えての快挙。今年ツアーデビューしたばかりのインビー・パークはツアー初勝利をとんでもない大舞台で飾ることになった。

パークの活躍は予期しようと思えばできていたはずだ。２００２年の全米女子アマチュア優勝、昨年の全米女子では最終日まで優勝争いするなど台頭すべく裏づけはあった。しかし、ポーラの初メジャー、ルイスのシンデレラストーリー、アニカのフェアウェルなど、話題が先行していた選手たちに気を取られ、もう一人若手のエリートがいたことを忘れてしまっていた。お見事としか言いようがない。
とにかく、先週も書いたが、世界の女子ゴルフを圧倒し続ける韓国人選手の勢いは凄まじいものがある。先週の「ウェグマンズLPGA」に続き２週連続制覇。今大会でも２日目のある時点では、上位１０名の中に「パーク」「キム」が５名もいた。インビー・パークの優勝でこの流れはさらに加速しそうだ。
