ゴルフの記事を書いていて毎回思うことがある。それは「歴史」なくして語れないことだ。来週に控えた「全米女子オープン」についていろんなサイトを渡り歩いていて、新たな「歴史」に遭遇してしまった。
今年の米国女子ツアーメジャー第３戦「全米女子オープン」は米ミネソタ州インターラチェン・カントリー・クラブで開かれる。

このインターラチェンCCは全長６,７８９ヤードと全米女子オープン史上最長のコースセッティングとなる。アメリカ中西部では名門コースの一つで、過去には全米オープンの予選会が開催され、最近では２００２年のソルハイム・カップ（女子のライダーカップ）の舞台ともなった。
このコースが全国区になったのは１９３０年の全米オープンだった。当然、僕は生まれていないのでこの目で目撃したわけではないが、その年の全米はゴルフ史に残る大会となった。
優勝したのは・・・
ボビー・ジョーンズ
ボビー・ジョーンズといえば「マスターズ」の創設者であり、アマチュアゴルファーの鏡であり、映画「ボビー・ジョーンズ ~球聖とよばれた男 ~」にもなっている伝説のゴルファー。この年、ジョーンズは全英、全英アマ、全米、全米アマと当時の４大メジャーと位置づけられていた大会を全て優勝してみせた。
いずれ、全英アマと全米アマはマスターズ、全米プロ選手権となり現在の「４大メジャー」の形になるわけだが、人類初の大快挙に当時のマスコミはふさわしいフレーズがないかと頭を悩ませていた。なぜなら、各マスコミはまさか一人のゴルファーが全４大会を優勝するとは思っていなかったからだ。
ある日、ジョーンズの地元でもあるアトランタの「アトランタ・ジャーナル」紙の記者が、ジョーンズの快挙を「グランドスラム」と名づけた。「グランドスラム」とは元来野球用語で「（４つの塁を踏む）満塁ホームラン」を意味して使われていて、４大会を制したジョーンズにふさわしく、馴染みやすいフレーズになった。全米各紙がこぞって使い始め、タイガー・ウッズが先日達成した「トリプルグランドスラム（４大メジャーを３回以上勝利）」も元はといえばジョーンズの快挙に遡るわけだ。
前置きが長くなってしまったが、そのジョーンズの歴史的「グランドスラム」の１つが今年の全米女子オープンの舞台インターラチェンCCで行われた。首位で迎えた最終日の１７番ホール、ジョーンズはダブルボギーを叩きそのリードは１打になった。誰もがプレーオフ突入を感じていた最終ホール、ジョーンズは１２メートルのバーディパットを沈め、見事に栄冠を手にした。
奇しくも、この１９３０年の大記録の後、ジョーンズは現役ゴルファーとして引退することになる。１９２３年から８年間でメジャー１３勝。ジャック・ニクラウス（１８勝）が登場するまで約４０年間破られなかった。「もう彼には制すべきモノがなくなってしまった」と当時の新聞記者は書き綴っている。今日のタイガーを彷彿とさせるような言葉だ...。
インターラチェンCCでの全米女子オープンには、上田桃子、宮里藍、横峯さくらなど日本人５名がエントリーしている。今年の女子メジャーはロレーナ・オチョアとヤニ・ツェンが勝利し、一人による「グランドスラム」達成はないが何か特別な記録が生まれそうな予感がする。
