そう語ったパドレイグ・ハリントンが2日後、オークランドヒルズCCでトロフィーを掲げてる姿を誰が想像できただろうか。
全米プロ選手権最終日、大混戦を抜け出し今季最後のメジャーを制したのは昨夜ちょこっと紹介したハリントン。先月の全英オープンに続きメジャー連覇を達成。全英⇒全米プロの連覇はタイガー・ウッズ、ニック・プライス、ウォルター・ヘイゲンに次いで史上4人目、ヨーロッパ出身の選手としては史上初の大快挙となった。

ハリントンは通算3アンダーで2位タイのセルヒオ・ガルシアとベン・カーティスに2打差をつけて優勝。これで直近の6メジャー大会を3勝。「タイガーみたいだな」と2003年の全英覇者のカーティスも舌を巻いた。奇しくも、この日、熾烈な争いを演じたのは2007年の全英オープンでプレーオフまでもつれたガルシアだった。
全英の時と同様、勝負を分けたのはハリントンのパッティングだった。世界屈指のパッティングのタッチを持つハリントン。ここ一番での集中力と度胸が彼を優勝へと導いた。

個人的な意見だが、数年前まではビッグ4(タイガー、ミケルソン、ビジェイ・シン、アーニー・エルス・・・またはレティーフ・グーセンを入れてビッグ5と言うモノもいた)と言われていた勢力図が、着実に変わったと思う。『ビッグ2とその他』といっても過言ではないだろう。タイガーとハリントン、そして勝てそうで勝てないミケルソン、ガルシア、アンソニー・キム、ロコ・メディエイト、ケニー・ペリーなどなど。
間違いなく言えるのは、今のハリントンの勝負根性に勝てるのはフロリダでゆったりソファーに座ってこの試合を見ていなかったあの人しかいない。来年のメジャーでの激突があれば、久しぶりにタイガーを脅かす存在になるのではないか。現に、2006年に宮崎県で開催されたダンロップフェニックストーナメントでは、ハリントンがタイガーをプレーオフの末、下している。
そして、この全米プロを終えてなんとも興味深い事実が!今年のメジャーは「負傷」していた選手が優勝している。トレバー・イメルマンは背中の手術明け直後にマスターズを、タイガーは片足で全米オープンを、ハリントンは左手首を負傷しながら全英を勝っている。そして、今回、ハリントンは・・・脱水症状を起こしながら勝ってしまった。
「(第2ラウンド「74」の後に)トレーナーに相談したら、ひょっとしたら脱水しているかもといわれた。噛み合っていない原因がそこにあったと気付いた。それからはずっと水分を補給することに専念した。単に疲労だったかもしれないし、本当にそれが原因だったかは証明できなかったけど、でもそれかもしれないと思ったらそれを治しさえすれば自分のゴルフが戻ってくると信じることができた。原因が分かっただけで、そこからは集中することができた」とハリントン。初日、2日目と過酷なコンディションでのプレーだっただけに、本当に脱水症状だったのかもしれない。それだけで71−74のスコアが66−66になるのだから、如何にメンタルと身体が同化しているというか、「心技一体」となってプレーすることの重要さを改めて知らされた気がする。
メジャー連覇を達成し、ハリントンの夢は更に広がる。
「『メジャーのサンデーバックナイン(最終ラウンドのラスト9ホールで勝負が決まるという意味)』という考え方がとにかく好きなんだ。次の『サンデーバックナイン』まであと7ヶ月待たなければいけないと思うと残念だ...それだけそのプレッシャーが好きなんだ。(来年のマスターズまで)何をして時間を潰せばいいのだろうか...」
最後に、メジャーを勝つためのヒントを少しだけ教えてくれた。
「ここ2年間は本当にメジャー大会に照準を合わせてきた。俺のスケジュールは全てメジャーのために組まれている。その間にも他の試合には出ている。それらの試合は『かけっこ』や『短距離走』のように時間が流れていくんだけど、メジャーは『マラソン』のような感覚なんだ。冷静になって、時間をかけていい、そんな気になるんだ。そして、最後の9ホールで勝敗が決まるという設定もたまらく好きだ。プレッシャーが掛かったときに誰が決められるのか、ってね」
マラソンでハリントンを捕らえられるのは、やっぱりあの人しかいないのかな...。
