先日のニュースでも報道されていましたが、先日、国際オリンピック委員会（IOC）は東京が開催地候補に挙がっている2016年五輪にゴルフとラグビー（7人制）の2種目を追加競技として正式に絞り込んだそうです。昨年の11月にIGF（国際ゴルフ連盟）が動き始めた際にも一度ご紹介しましたが、112年ぶりにゴルフがオリンピック競技として承認されるまであと一歩のところまできています。10月9日のIOC総会で正式決定するとのことです。
このニュースを受け、全米プロ選手権に出場しているトッププロたちは各々の意見を述べていました。各選手の反応を紹介しておきます。
■タイガー・ウッズ（アメリカ）
Q.IOC理事会はゴルフとラグビー・セブンズを正式に候補として挙げたようです。これについての反応は？先日、出場したいと言っていましたが･･･。
タイガー・ウッズ
「是非、出場してみたいね、ラグビーチームの一員として（笑）。というのは冗談で、これはゴルフにとって素晴らしいこと。むしろ遅かったくらい。我々の競技はグローバルなスポーツだし、世界中どこでもプレーされている。このタイミングも良いと思うし、10月か11月に承認されて正式に五輪競技になることを祈っている」
■ロリー・マッキロイ（北アイルランド）
「（候補に挙がったことを聞いて）本当！？最初にゴルフが候補に挙がると聞いた時は、僕は少し疑っていたし心配だった。でも考えれば考えるほど、正式競技になることはゴルフにとって素晴らしいことだし、よりグローバルなスポーツになって、ロシア、インド、中国といった国の選手たちが世界の舞台で認められる良い機会にもなるんだ、と思い直しました。
「最初は、4年間その舞台のために照準を合わせてくる他の競技のアスリートにフェアーではないのでは、と思っていました。でも、ゴルフにとってはプラスになることの方が多い。だからオリンピック競技に入るかもしれないということは喜ばしいこと。これによってゴルフというスポーツが更に進化していき、競技人口も増えるといいですよね」
Q.オリンピックは見ますか？
マッキロイ：
「体操競技は（笑）。いや、じっくりは見たことがないよ。以前、ビーチバレーを見たことがあるけど、それもオリンピックの時じゃなかったし。
「オリンピックの金メダルを獲得できるのは本当に一握りのアスリートなわけだし、それができたら本当に名誉なことになりますよね。あと、去年のオリンピックでマイケル・フェルプスが金メダルを取った時に、レブロン・ジェームズやバスケットボールチームの選手たちまでが応援に駆けつけていた。そういう一体感、国というチームで戦うことも体験したみたい。何年でしたっけ、2016年？「チームGB（英国）」に入れるかどうかは分からないけど、その時にトム・デイリー（昨年の五輪、14歳にしてシンクロナイズドダイビングのイギリス代表として出場）が金メダルを取る瞬間を目の当たりにでき、チームの一員でいられたら、それは幸せですよね」
■ハンター・メイハン（アメリカ）
「自分の国を代表してプレーできると思うと興奮するよ。どのような基準で代表選手を選んで、どのようなフォーマットで競うのかは分からない。きっと決めなければいけないことが山のようにあるんだろうけど、『ゴルフで金メダル』が獲れるってすごいことだよ」

「いいことだと思うよ。考えてみてよ。テニスがあり、『ティドリーウインク』だって認められそうになってるんだよ！？（笑）あとはBMX ・マウンテンバイクだって競技でしょ？ゴルフは何百年もの間プレーされてきたスポーツ。絶対に（五輪の競技として）あるべき。（一見入れそうもない）他のスポーツが認められて、ゴルフが入っていないのはおかしいよね。代表チームに入ることができたなら、絶対に、いや、絶対！に出場するよ」

「両方だろうね。絶対に72ホールのストロークプレーはあるべきだと思う。チーム戦なら3名1組で2つのベストスコアを足して合計を競うフォーマットも面白いんじゃないかな。分かんない。俺、単なるゴルファーだから。選ぶ権利も、決める権利もないしね（笑）」
■パドレイグ・ハリントン（アイルランド）
「オリンピックのゴルフは『メジャー大会』のような雰囲気を作るべきだろうね。100年も経てば、オリンピックのゴルフが5つ目のメジャーになっているかもしれないよ。もちろん、そこに至るまでの道のりは長いし、ある日突然起きるようなことではない。
「4年に一度ということを考えると、時間が経てばゴルフ界の目玉大会になるかもしれない。ということは、72ホールのストロークプレーが相応しいと思う。なぜなら、その形式が最も実力通りに決まり、力のある選手が必ず勝つ形式だから。4年に一回の周期ということは、多くの選手にとっては何回も出場できるものではないだろうし、活躍している選手でも1回、多くて2回出られればいい方ではないだろうか。だから、それだけ特別な意味合いを持つということでもあるよね。
