石川遼のマスターズ出場が確定しましたね。17歳で「夢」が叶ってしまうのは、今後の長い選手生命を考えたらどうなのかと思ってしまうが、それでもあのマスターズ委員会に「招待に値する実力」と言わせたのはすごい快挙。素直に喜んでいいと思う。マスターズの最年少出場記録は1952年の大会でトミー・ジェイコブスが記録した17歳1ヶ月21日。石川はそれに次いで2番目の若い年齢での出場となる。

このニュースを報じたアメリカのメディアの反応はというと...微妙だ。日本では明日のスポーツ紙の一面はどこも「遼、マスターズ出場だ！」とお祭り騒ぎになるだろう。アメリカの各スポーツ紙・サイトも同じくこのニュースを報じているのですが、どこか温度差を感じてしまいます。
大手スポーツサイトの取り上げ方を見てみると...
「日本のティーン、石川がマスターズ招待へ」（espn.com⇒上記）
「日本人の天才少年、マスターズ特別招待へ」（golf.com）
「オーガスタ・ナショナル、10代の選手を特別招待」（pgatour.com）
と、ほとんどのサイトは固有名詞まで出すという知名度ではないが、それなりに取り上げている。「ティーネージャー（10代）がマスターズに」というキャッチがニュース価値があるのだろう。
さて、肝心の記事の中身ですが、ESPN、CNNSI（スポーツイラストレーテッド誌）などはニュアンス的には「無名の17歳が出場する価値があるのか」と一歩引いた冷静な報じ方をしている。ESPNでは石川がPGAツアーの2試合にも招待されていると前置きし、
「もし彼が世界ランキングトップ60に残れば、来月のWGCアクセンチュア・マッチプレー選手権に出場することができる。もしトップ50に入れば、ドラールで開催されるWGC CA選手権にも出場できる。そうすれば、彼のマスターズへの特別招待を疑問視する声もなくなるだろう。マスターズ前週までに世界ランキングトップ50に入れば自動的にマスターズ出場が叶うわけだから」
といった具合で、前提として石川は「本当に実力があるのかも分からない」といったニュアンスが文脈から読み取れる。世界中に出たくても出れないトッププロが山ほどいる。デービス・ラブIII、デビッド・トムズ、ライダーカップでアメリカを優勝に導いたJ.B.ホームズなどなど。彼らを差し置いてこの「17歳の少年」が選ばれたのだから、石川のプレーを見たことのないメディア関係者にとっては頭の中が？？だらけなのは容易に想像ができる。
この辺がメディアの教養の違いなのかな～とも感じる。いや、マスターズに出ることがいかにすごいことなのか、マスターズという大会の重み、歴史を把握している上での報じ方だからこのように少しネガティブなニュアンスになってしまうのだろう。
日本人として、そして石川遼には活躍して日本でアメリカのゴルフを広めてもらいたい一人としては、「黙ってみてろ！」と言いたいところだが、それは4月第1週まで持ち越しということで。
とにかく、今年のマスターズはもんのすごい盛り上がりそうですね。でも石川にはアメリカ南部独特のディープフライチキンでも食って、あんまプレッシャー感じないでプレーしてほしいな。どうせ何回も出られるわけだし。
