■アンヘル・カブレラには何度か止めを刺したかに見えたのですが・・・
ペリー：アンヘルはあまり気にしていなかった。それより、前のグループでチャド・キャンベルがいいプレーをしていたのは分かったし、タイガーとフィルはとんでもない騒ぎを起こしていたから。
アンヘルは15、16番で素晴らしいショットを見せた。彼のバーディを帳消しにすることはできた。（パー3）16番で彼は寄せたけど、俺のは30cmくらいに付けた。
17番でのアプローチが痛かった。ジョンディア・クラシックの15、18番でも同じミスをした。少し緊張すると右手が強く出てしまう癖がある。抑えようと思っていたんだけど、どうしても打ち込んでしまった。
でも17、18番はタフなホールだ。18番では良いティショットを打てたけど、思っていたより少しドローが強すぎて手前のバンカーに入ってしまった。打った瞬間は完璧だと思ったんだけどな...。
でも最高の一日だった。16番までは最高のプレーができていた。17、18番ではそこそこ。別に酷いプレーをしたわけではないし、最後もウィニングパットがあった。
あの18番のパットはタイガーだけではなく、ここで勝った選手の多くが決めるのを見てきた。だからラインは完璧に把握していた。あれが今日一番がっかりしたパットかな。優しく打ちすぎた。あれは思い切り打たなければいけないパットだった。だってマスターズを勝てるチャンスなんてそうあるものではないだろう？あれはにガッカリした。
でもアンヘルも決めるべきところでは決めてきた。木の中に入れて出すだけで、その後は素晴らしいPWのショットで2メートルくらいつけて、パットをねじ込んでプレーオフに入ってきたんだから。だから彼を称えるべき。俺と同じで、彼だって闘い続けた。
■メジャータイトルが目前に来ていて、1996年にバルハラで行われた全米プロ選手権のことを未だに思い出すと言っていましたが...。
ペリー：これで思い出してしまう試合が2つになったよ。
■こちらの方が思い出したくない試合になるのでは？
ペリー：全く違う状況だからね。バルハラの時はまだ若かった。ここでは歳も取ったし、経験も積んでいた。これだけ経験があれば大丈夫だと思っていた。これで足りると思っていた。本当に。
それでもプレーの内容には満足しているし、誇りに思う。きっちり落とすべきところに打っていたし、そして耐えに耐え続けた。
だから13番の3パットが痛かった。あのパットのラインは分かっていたのに、あんなに早く転がるとは・・・。ちょっと触っただけだったのに。
でも自分を哀れんだりなんかはしない。これは何回も言っていることだけど、もしこれが人生最大の汚点になっても、俺は十分生きていける、って。本当にそう思ってる。素晴らしい選手は最後の詰めが強い。アンヘルもその一人。これで彼は2つ目のメジャータイトル。俺は2つ逃してるけど、でも俺は2回しかチャンスを掴めていない。
だから、ベスページブラック（全米オープン）も全英も全米プロも今から楽しみだよ。この経験があったからまだできるんだって思える。こんな局面でも、今日のラウンドは楽しめた。今週はパットだけが良くなかった。距離感は合っていた。ラインの読みが甘かった。
スコアも良かったけど、それでも毎日数打は縮めることができた。ここぞという時にパットを決めることができなかった。今日も7番では1.2メートルに寄せたのに、右にプッシュしてしまった。
1つのショットが勝敗を分ける世界にいる。だから辛い。でもそれがゴルフというスポーツ。メンタルが強くなければやられてしまう。だから今週の結果は喜ぶことにする。楽しむことにする。
■16番を終えた時点でどこかで「勝った」と思っていませんでしたか？
ペリー：それはない。完全に集中していた。17、18番はタフなホールになるのは分かっていた。17番は狭いホールで、今日は逆風だった。飛距離を出すのは大変なホールになるのは分かっていた。
■プレーオフ2ホール目の10番、あの2打目は･･･。
ペリー：ボールの右側に泥がべっとり付いていた。（キャディの）フレディーに言っていたんだ。「ボールの右に泥が付いている。絶対左に行く。行き過ぎなければいいが」と。案の定、左に行き、ギリギリのところでグリーンの淵に当たって転がっていってしまった。もっと右を狙えばよかったんだろうけど、それは後の祭。どうなるか分からなかったわけだし。
■16番のティショットを打った直後、あなたはかなり嬉しそうでした。
ペリー：見ていたらわかっただろ。ゲーリー・プレーヤーみたいだっただろ？打った直後にボールを追いかけるように歩いていった。完璧だと確信していたからね。カップに向かって落ちていく場所に落ちるのが分かっていたんだ。観客も大喜びだったね。まさか20cmに付けられるとは思っていなかったけど･･･。
それでもアンヘルは厳しいパットを入れ返してきた。彼にとってもいい場面だったんじゃないかな。
■なんとなくギャラリーはあなたに勝って欲しかったというのは感じていましたか？
ペリー：UK（ケンタッキー大学の省略）とかバルハラとかライダーカップとかいろんな名前で呼ばれたよ。何千人という人が毎日、毎ホール後押ししてくれた。いくつかのホールでは聞こえなくなるくらいの歓声だった。彼らも楽しんでくれたと思う。
