石川遼がマスターズに向けて順調な仕上がりを見せているようですね。月曜日に行われた公開練習ラウンドもイーグルを含むイーブンパー。マスターズの怖いところは日を追う毎に変貌するグリーンの速さ、そして分刻みに変わる風向き。3パットせずに、グリーン上でいかに攻め続けられるかが予選通過のカギになりそう。
ところで、この日、石川が練習ラウンドに選んだ（選ばれた？）相手は同じく10代のダニー・リーとイアン・ポールター。リーは韓国生まれのニュージーランド人で、昨年、タイガー・ウッズが持っていた全米アマチュア選手権の最年少記録を更新し、今年のマスターズ出場権を獲得したのです。

石川とは違い、リーはまだプロ転向していない「アマチュア」なのですが、今年に入りPGAツアーの常連アンソニー・キムやカミロ・ビジェガスらも出場した「ジョニー・ウォーカー・クラシック」で見事に優勝。先週開催された全米アマ優勝者VS全欧アマ優勝者のマッチプレー対決「ジョージアカップ」にも出場し、オランダのレイナー・サクストンを2&1で破り、今週の大一番に弾みをつけた。マスターズ終了後はプロ転向するとのことです。
プレジデンツカップのキャプテンを勤めるグレッグ・ノーマンも「スイングが美しい。弾道にブレがない」と舌を巻いている。石川と共にプレジデンツカップのメンバー候補として一目置いている。
今回のマスターズでも「ダークホース」として挙げている記者や関係者もいるほどリーへの期待は日に日に高まっている。勝気な性格と強気な発言が多く、別の意味で注目されてもいますが、マスターズという大舞台で実績を残すことができれば、一気にスター街道を進むことになるでしょう。
同じ10代でも、現段階では実績的に石川を一歩リードしているリー。今回が初マスターズとなる2人の「ティーン対決」にも注目してみたいですね。
