米国側ではミシガン州デトロイト郊外の２コースで、計２ラウンドの合計スコアで争われた。有力所では、大ベテランのデービス・ラブIII（写真）がプレーオフまでもつれるも、最後は出場権をしっかり獲得。２２年連続となる全英オープン出場を決めた。
その他では「ザ・プレーヤーズ」で２位に入ったポール・ゴイドス、リッチ・ビーム、アレックス・チェイカ、ジョン・ロリンズ、ティム・ペトロビックらPGAツアーの常連ら１４名が出場を決めた。
大西洋の向こう、ロンドン郊外のサニングデールでは同じく最終予選が行われ国際色豊かな顔ぶれが１８枚の切符を巡り争った。トップで通過したのは、通算７アンダー（１３１）をマークしたサイモン・ウェイクフィールド（イギリス）。２度のマスターズ覇者でリウマチと闘っているホセ・マリア・オラサバルは、プレーオフの末に敗退。２００５年３位タイに入った実力者の出場は叶わなかった。
今年の全英オープンは７月１７日からイギリスのサウスポートにある「ロイヤルバークデールGC」で開催される。最後にこの舞台で全英オープンが開催されたのは１９９８年。マーク・オメーラが優勝している。昨年の覇者はパドレイグ・ハリントン。ここ３年で２度優勝しているタイガー・ウッズはケガのため欠場する。
