日本ではあまり馴染みのない名前かもしれない。しかし、ジャックリン（イギリス）の勝ちっぷりは、全米オープンの歴史に残るものとなっている（タイガーの登場でインパクトは薄れてしまったが...）。
前年の全英オープンを勝利したジャックリンだったが、全くといっていいほど注目されていなかった。リー・トレビノ、ジャック・ニクラウスらの台頭でゴルフブーム真っ只中で、この年の大会は当時最高の3,605名が出場登録し、史上２番目の観客動員数を記録した。
異様な雰囲気の中での大会は、ジャックリンの独壇場となった。強風が吹き荒れる中、初日からアンダーパーで回り、２位以下に７打差をつけ、４日間通算でアンダーパーでフィニッシュしたのはジャックリンのみだった。
初日から最終日まで首位を守って全米を勝った選手は過去に４名しかおらず、ジャックリン以降は誰もその快挙を成し遂げられていない。また、７打差での勝利は当時は４９年ぶり、イギリス出身の優勝者は５０年ぶりだった。ジャックリン以降、ゴルフ発祥の地イギリスからの優勝者は未だ現れていない。
タイガー・ウッズがゴルフ界を圧倒し始め、ジャックリンの記録的な全米オープンはあまり語られることはないが、彼が残した偉大な４日間は記憶より記録に残っていくのだろう。
