先日も書いた通り、LPGAツアーの主力選手による「脅迫状」をきっかけにLPGAコミッショナーの座から退くことになったキャロライン・ビベンス氏。現地時間の月曜日（13日）、LPGAツアーはビベンス氏が正式に辞任したことを明らかにし、マーシャ・エバンス理事がコミッショナー代行として就任しました。そして、理事会の顧問には昨年現役から退いたアニカ・ソレンスタムが就任しました。
エバンス氏は元アメリカ赤十字社（American Red Cross）、ガールスカウト・オブ・アメリカ会長で、昨年よりLPGA理事会に就いています。新コミッショナー探しは既に始まっていて、年内を目処に新たなリーダーを決める予定。エバンス氏自身もコミッショナーになるための最善の努力を尽くすと言っているようです。
「キャロライン自身が自分の力で前進していくことが困難な状況になってしまっていました。何かを変えなければいけなかった」とLPGA理事会のチェアウーマン、ドーン・ハドソンは言っています。
これで一先ずは一件落着なのかもしれませんが、今回の一連の出来事を少し冷静に振り返ってみたいと思います。
今回新たに明らかになった内容によると、ポーラ・クリーマー、ロレーナ・オチョア、そして全米女子オープン最終日をトップで迎えたクリスティー・カーらが直筆のサイン入りの手紙を送ったとか。その中身はビベンス解任を求めると同時に、次期コミッショナーが見付かるまで臨時のリーダーを立てて運営して欲しいと書いてあったそうです。全米女子オープンを観戦するために木曜日に会場入る予定だったビベンス氏ですが、その予定も急遽変更したとのこと。
個人的な意見ですが、ビベンス氏解雇を求める手紙に署名した選手たち、誰が率先して結託したのかは明らかになっていませんが、僕はこのアクションは尊敬します。
世の多くのサラリーマンでもそうですが、「組織」のトップを従業員が結集して、署名を集めて、降ろさせるなんて相当な覚悟がないとできないことだと思います。今回の騒動の中心となった選手たちは、目先の利益や個人の目標などではなく、自分たちがプロとして何をすべきなのか、何ができるのか、何が求められているのかを冷静に考えていた結果なんだと思います。
今回のようなアクションを取った裏には、それだけ自分たちが「プロ」集団であり、見せ物であるという強い自覚があったからなのかもしれません。時代の先を見て、そこに向かって邁進していく・・・明治維新の武士に通ずるものを感じました。誰が高杉晋作だったのか・・・きっと彼女たちの中ではしっかりとした役割分担があったのでしょう。
その反面、少し気になったのがこの騒動をまるで他人事のように傍観していたアメリカのゴルフファン。米メディアは大々的に伝えていましたが、例えば、CNNSIが運営するgolf.comというサイトには･･･

・外国の選手がいくら強いと言われても、誰も見やしない。ヒットしか打てないプロ野球は野球じゃない。唯一、見ていてエキサイティングな選手はミッシェル・ウィ。
・非英語圏（英語を話せない）選手の数抑制に繋がることを祈る。
・LPGAなんて誰も興味ない。まともに英語もしゃべれない選手に独占されているツアー。英語を話せて、パーソナリティーがあって、感情移入できる選手が出てこない限りLPGAは変わらない。
・LPGAの失敗はコミッショナーとは関係ない話。（アメリカでは）誰もサッカーなんか見ない。でもそれは世界で最もポピュラーなスポーツ。なぜか？スター選手5名の名前も出てこないからだろうね。LPGAを独占している海外の選手が表現力（感情が）豊ではないことがLPGA後退の理由。大会の70％を海外でやればいいんだ。

と言った極めて冷めたコメントが多く寄せられていました。なんでしょう、この選手とファンの温度差・・・。
それとも、これがファン＝大衆の声として受け入れるべきなのでしょうか。
言葉の壁って思っている以上に大きいのかもしれませんね。昨年、LPGAツアーが強制的に選手に英語を話すように仕向けようとして猛反発を食らっていましたが、やり方が問題だっただけで主張していたこと、選手たちに伝えたかったことは正しかったのかもしれないですね。
確かに、LPGAの試合は見ていてもっと物理的に世界中を動き回っても良いのではと思います。特に韓国、西ヨーロッパ、日本・・・。日本でも毎年LPGAの試合をやっていますが、その際に帰国する宮里藍や上田桃子はあくまで「凱旋」帰国していると見られています。そうではなくて日本で開催されるLPGAの試合もツアーの一部であることが認知されれば、LPGAの国際的なカラーもより前面に出てくるのではないでしょうか。F1がいい例です。毎週各国でプレーする形態に変えてしまえば、こういった冷ややかなファンの見方は変わってくるのかもしれません。
「インターナショナル」なツアーは果たして経済的に実現可能なのかは別問題ですが、少なくとも今の形では赤字を垂れ流し続けるだけ。新しい指揮官の下で、ツアー全体に新たな動きが出始めるかもしれませんね。
それにしても、アメリカ人って本当に分かりやすいです。
