米LPGAツアーの開幕戦「SBSオープン」で終始優勝争いを演じ、その実力と存在感を示したミッシェル・ウィ。8ホールを残して3打差を守り切れなかった甘さを指摘する声もありますが、アニカ・ソレンスタムがいなくなった今、ウィがこれからのツアーを引っ張っていく存在であることをファンは認めているようです。

スポーツビジネスジャーナルのジョン・ショー氏のレポートによると、「LPGAツアーのメンバーとして初めて挑んだ大会で2位に入ったウィのプレーは記録的な視聴率、ウェブでのアクセスを生んだ」とのこと。
具体的には、3日間競技で行われたこの大会、ゴルフチャンネルの放映は平均323,000世帯で見られ、2008年との比較では34％増だったとのこと。最終日にいたっては428,000世帯で視聴され、これは単日の視聴数としてはゴルフチャンネル史上4番目に高い数字だったそうです。
さらに、個人的に興味があるところでもあるのですが、SBSオープンの開催週、LPGA.comは520万ページビューのアクセスを記録し、こちらも昨年対比で55％も増えたそうで、これもLPGA.comのサイト史上2番目に高い週アクセスだったとのこと。ちなみに、最高アクセスを記録したのは2006年のエビアンマスターズの週で、この時（610万PV）もウィが優勝争いを演じた時でした（結果は2位）。
SBSオープンはハワイで行われ、最終日はライブ放映され東海岸の視聴者にとっても見やすい時間帯だったことが増加の原因として挙げられています。
それにしてもウィの引きは強いですね。これ、実は僕も密かに感じていました。

青のラインがSBSオープンの4日間、その1週間前が緑のラインになっています。最終日の14日とその翌日の15日が前週と比較しても大幅に増加していて、比較すると
・セッション数：20.10％増
・ページビュー：34.03％増
・平均ページビュー：11.60％増
と各カテゴリーで大幅に増加していました。
さらに、この大会期間中に何をきっかけでGet in the Hole!にお越しいただいたのかが気になるわけで、
主にGoogleで「SBSオープン」「lpga 速報」というキーワードが引っ掛かっていたみたいです。宮里藍、上田桃子も活躍していたため、どこか他のところで見聞きした情報を元に検索して来られたのでしょう。
でも、星の数ほどあるゴルフブログサイトの中で、こんな小さなサイトでもそれなりに影響があったこと、素直にビックリしました。
もっとマクロな見方をすると、メジャーなスポーツサイトやテレビ局は「ミッシェル・ウィ」というキーワードだけで従来の何倍もの売上を出せてしまうわけで、それだけ業界が潤っていくということが容易に想像できますよね。ウィがQTを通過し、晴れてLPGAメンバーになった事の重大さ、当たり前の話なのですが改めて気付かせていただきました。
そして、ゴルフチャンネルをはじめ、メジャーなゴルフサイトは彼女が出場すればウマい飯が食えるということがよく分かりました。僕はうまい棒の一本くらいいただきました。
