米女子ツアー開幕戦「SBSオープン」の最終日、首位で並んでスタートしたアンジェラ・スタンフォードが10番ホールを終えた時点でミッシェル・ウィに３打差を付けられるも、ウィの自滅にも助けられて大会記録に並ぶ通算１０アンダーでツアー４勝目、ここ７戦で３勝目を逆転勝利で飾った。
上位二人からは離されたが、最終日1アンダーで回った宮里藍がヤニ・ツェンと並んで３アンダー、５位タイ。上田桃子はこの日６オーバーの大叩きで通算1オーバー、２０位タイに後退して開幕戦を終えた。

きっと本人は「優勝」の二文字が頭をよぎっていたのだろう。同組のスタンフォードが10番ホールをボギーとして３打差のリード。残り８ホール、パープレーで乗り切ればまず負けることはない・・・。
守りに入ってしまったからなのか、次のホールに落とし穴が待っていた。ティショットを曲げてしまい池の中に。ドロップをした3打目はグリーンを捕らえられず、結局このホールでダブルボギー。リードが一気に１打差に縮まった。
苦戦するウィを尻目に、それまでバタバタだったスタンフォードが12番ホールから3連続バーディで一気に形勢逆転。ウィは16番で１メートル弱のバーディパットで追い付くチャンスはあったがこれを外し、逆にスタンフォードがバーディを決め勝負あり。わずか数時間の間でここまで試合が動くと見ている方も面白い。ゴルフって勢いのゲームなんだと思ってしまう。
LPGAツアーメンバーとしてもデビュー戦に参加するためにスタンフォード大学を１週間休んできたウィ。奇しくも破れた相手の名前までスタンフォードだなんてさぞかし悔しかったことだろう・・・。
「今日はいいゴルフができたと思う。。。あの1ホールが残念だけど、それ以外では自分のゴルフには満足している。もちろん、今はちょっといい気分ではないけど、今週のゴルフは前向きになれる要素がたくさんあった。課題も見えてきた。次のレベルに上がるために、何をしなければいけないのか、取れそうで取れなかった優勝杯を勝ち取るために今まで以上に努力をするモチベーションになるわ」と語ったウィ。
それにしても「詰めの甘い」ウィはプロになっても続くのだろうか。これで自身５度目の２位フィニッシュ（SBSオープンでは２度目）。ウィが最後に優勝したのは13歳で勝った全米女子パブリック・リンクス選手権。勝利の女神からは6年近く見放されている。
